the best hockey play by play guy

Watch a little too much hockey, but there are worse habits. Wondered who people think is the best in the business for play by play.

My vote goes to Chris Cuthbert..by a mile. Also still like Bob Cole. Love his expressions.

Gary Thorne for me. Also the guy who called the Penguins games back in the day of Lemieux was hilarious.

It's not even close... Pierre Houde of RDS. There isn't an English speaking announcer who can hold a candle to him.

How about HNIC's Punjabi announcer, fantastic, just amazing! At the other end of the scale I do not care for Dean Brown....

I dunno.... Everytime I hear the oxymoronical expression " Cleared........................, but not out!" I grimace a little.

I loved René Lecavalier in the day when I watched hockey. Also liked listening to Howie Meeker on Saturday nights with my grandmother when he was the english channel announcer. All the old guys here on the forum will know what i'm talking about.

all I can say is my least favorite is Gord Miller ( I'd rather not have the volume on)

most animated is Rick Jeanneret ( Sabres )

and whoever the guy in this snippit is , he's a real beauty

You're right there... one of the nicest guys in broadcasting. His English is pretty darn good too. I often wish some English network would pick Houde up, but I'm sure RDS pays him well enough to keep him there forever. I also watch all of the F1 car racing broadcasts on RDS because I'd rather hear Houde announce them in French than tolerate the lame English announcers they use on TSN.

I began watching hockey in 1962 as a student at College St. Joseph in New Brunswick. Most of the games we watched or listened to were on the French language CBC. From that moment on, I was hooked on Les Canadiens and Rene Lecavalier. Monsieur Lecavalier was my favourite hockey broadcaster, though when I was able to catch a game on the English broadcast, I was mightily impressed with Foster Hewitt. My favourite analyst was Howie Meeker. His enthusiasm was infectious.
