I'd be interested to see Scott's putting stats for the tournament. Up until the final hole / playoff, he didn't seem to be making much of anything.

Really? Ban the long putter? Come on.....Scott missed as many putts today as anyone. Go get one if you're jealous! If the long putter is so beneficial why doesn't everyone use one?
I don't really think they'll ever be banned. The PGA tour has too much clout.Born to Golf Forced to Work

i think , at least for scott, the long putter is not great for long putts, harder to gain momentum in the swing hence he always leave long ones short, but for those shorter putts, yes he certainly is much better than he used to be

If this has been discussed previously, then I apologize, but I'd like to know why the R&A / PGA allowed this in the first place. Seems a little chicken-s*#t to try to ban it now just because some people, who would not normally, are winning with it. Has there been any credible analysis showing this "unfair advantage"? If so I missed that too. IF they agree to ban it, and IMHO that is a big IF, then the decent thing to do is to grand-father it, and only for Pros, not us old retired guys with the shimmies. BTW I don't use it as it just does not feel right, both physically and traditionally... but that's just me.

Everyone is free to use it no matter how ridiculous it looks. So there is no competitive advantage.

My opinion is that it really does not matter. If i think back when I tried it, it felt horrible and would not be caught dead with one of those but a lot of players like them. Scott did not putt that well except at the end. Some people putt better than others, its a fact of life and I dont see it as an advantage and cant see what the fuss is all about. I play with a 80 year old gentleman who still uses a Bullseye putter and he can put most of us to shame with that old thing. Like i said, you got it or you dont.

Anchoring a golf club to the body is not what golf is all about , long putter lovers just give it up , it is gaining an unfair advantage , just like dropping a ball two yards back from its original position is gaining an unfair advantage

Cheating, unfair advantage. Last time I looked it was part of the rules. No stats on any advantage but still people are allowed to call fellow players cheaters on a public forum.
I appeal to the moderators to discuss the limits of comments on this issue.

If you read my post correctly , I never said anything about cheating , unfair advantage yes , this is my opinion not the forums
There is an unfair advantage by anchoring the putter to the body , I do not have a problem with anyone using a anchored putter at this moment in time , as up till now it is still within the rules of golf

A central principle, although not one of the numbered rules, is found in the R&A rule book's inside front cover:[1] "Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair. But to do what is fair, you need to know the Rules of Golf."
Isn't it fair if it is within the rules of golf?
I am curious at how many players who voice their comments on the belly putter have gone out and replaced their wedges with conforming grooves?
So does someone with old wedges have an unfair advantage?

I agree, so why do people feel they can call people cheaters or that it is unfair?
It is only unfair if it against the rules. So, why do people feel it is OK to say it in a public forum. Would they go up to a competitor on the course and say " Hey, buddy that long putter is cheating!"

People are entitled to voice their opinions. That is what a forum is for and this thread is in no way out of hand in my opinion.

[QUOTE=nokids I'd rather not be a cheater. Only 80's year old golfers with a doc's note should anchor a long putter[/QUOTE]
I guess the word cheater hits a nerve. The other comments are as you say not out of hand. It just seems to easy to post something in a faceless manner on the web where the comments would probably not be voiced face to face.
I guess my opinion is I take offense to being labeled a cheater. I have not broken any rules of golf but in his mind I am a cheater.
I am curious if any other users on a belly putter find the comment offensive?

Tigger you have some valid points there , the thing is I don't anchor a wedge to my body , my whole argument on this is all based on anchoring , I have also said that at this time it is within the rules, tigger I work with a hand piece all day long at work , I anchor one hand on the other when using this so that I can stabilize my movements , it gives much more stability and gives a more precise motion , now I'm not trying to base my whole argument on what I do at work , it's just that once you anchor something to the body you have a much more stable motion.
Mods please don't close this thread, this is a good subject to debate

I don't like anchoring either, I don't care what the rules say. If you play competitively and think it's advantageous to you, go for it, the rules allow it, for now. Split hairs all ya want, I think it's pretty obvious that's not the way the game was meant to be played.
Anchoring the long putter for seniors is fine by me, IMO at that length it's not as much of an issue either . The belly putter is blasphemy, I don't care what the rules say or don't say.
