Washing a cap

Hey guys! Im counting on your tricks on how to wash a cap without destroying it. I have a few caps that are really precious to me, and they're up for a wash. Thanks in advance.

I just throw them in the washing machine with the rest of the laundry, hang to dry, and they seem fine. Maybe someone else has had bad experience in doing the same.

When I was a kid, ballcaps had cardboard peaks, putting them in the wash would ruin them. I remember there was a plastic mould you could put you cap over and put it in the dishwasher to keep them nice, I think it was made by K-tel.
Nowdays it seems that most caps have plastic peaks, so no trouble there, they retain the shape just fine.

I use some "Shout" or something equivalent, especially on my white hats which get a lot of sweat stains. Throw them in on delicate and hang to dry.

Dishwasher for me, works pretty darn well too.

I wear mine in the shower and wash it with shampoo. Works well and it never ruined a cap for me. I've had my bosox hat for 12 yrs and still looks OK

I also use shout and old too brush... then a littl Palmolive dish soap.
..and yes the same soft brush I use to clean all my irons in the kitchen sink

I put 4 hats in the dshwasher last night with dishwasher detergeant. They are all gleaming, and did not shrink. I made sure to use cold water though. The crappy thing is I put my white TW hat on today and went in the bush while killing time at the Meadows and got it dirty. I did find a brand new prov1 though. Not a bad trade off I think

What hole did you find it? Was it a number 4 with a blue line marked on it??? I want it back

I've always used the dishwasher with much success...but I also like the idea of the shower/shampoo method....that way it keeps the form of your head when it gets wet. I'll have to try that one next time.

Well, I tried the shower/shampoo suggestion on one of my fav's with little success. Seems to have lost most of it's outside color but it's still a bright yellow on the inside!!
Maybe I should have worn it inside out??

Another reason to head back to the Carolina's!!

Anybody else have any success or failure with any other suggestions?

There is a product sold at Walmart. It is made out of plastic and is designed just to clean mens ball caps. It has the shape of a ball cap with several plastic bars running to the middle. There is a matching piece connected by a hinge.
You place the hat over the bowl shaped first piece, then snap the matching piece down over the cap to hold it in place. I cannot remember if it is the dishwasher or washing machine (I believe the dw) but it works well apparently. You sometimes see it in the cleaning section of grocery stores as well.

And we're not done yet! Just wanted to add, if you want that “new” hat look, spray your hat with spray starch after washing and set it out in the sun to dry. It will keep its shape longer.
