Players Championship camera in bunker ruling

If anyone saw this, its an advantage to the player when he asked the official to drop his ball so not to hit the inbeded camera in the sand trap. His lie was like a 'fried' egg and now he gets a free drop 1 club length behind the ball and his ball has a good lie!!! I dont get this? Should he not get the same type of lie (fried egg) as i call them, and not an almost perfect lie? Any golf Gods here can clear this up?

A free drop in a hazard. Interesting.

Who was the player and what hole was it?

The camera would be an immovable obstruction and the player would be eligible for a free drop in the bunker. The resultant lie is just the luck of the draw.

PS. There are no 'hazards' in the rules now.

It was a Canadian Mackenzie Hughes that got the ruling.

That's where the rules can be to your advantage. The communication with the refereee was excellent in that the right questions were asked. MacKenzie's swing would have totally taken the camera out and by the rules he was entitled to the free relief. Good job by him and the refereee.

Agree with you Gerry. I was just wondering why his ball was not buried halfway in the sand when he dropped it but understand it now.

One of the reasons that dropping from knee height was introduced.

As he's getting the relief from the immovable obstruction you do not have to re-create the lie. It was his good luck!!! If he was just identifying his ball or trying to find it in the bunker then he would not have the free relief and would have had to re-create his lie where the ball was. The Rules can sometimes help.

No you didn't. You meant bunker

Besides, you wouldn't get relief from an immovable obstruction if your ball is in a penalty area.
