Red Wings fan here. This never would have happened to Steve Yzerman or Nick Lidstrom...The fact the Sens dragged their feet not resigning him and letting him play out his career here in Ottawa is an embarrassment.

I'm neither a fan of the Sens or Alfredsson as a player, but respect the hell out of him for sticking around with his team for so long and all the community work he has done here.

I could see him actually there for one or two years, and frankly I don't think he's coming back.

    Another interesting take, http://www.silversevensens.com/2013/...iel-alfredsson

personally it all about winning, not the money. Ottawa I am sure would have offered him 5 million to stay but he wants to be on a winning team and I for one do not blame him.

He's a 40 year old player who under-produced last year and looking for a one year deal. 5 million was too high of a price for him. I don't have any hard feelings against him, but I think Bobby Ryan is a step in the right direction, not to mention we still have a ton of room under the cap.

This is a good deal for the Sens, as long as Bobby Ryan stays in Ottawa beyond his 2 years on his contract. If he packs up and leaves, this is a bad trade for Ottawa. They should be trying to lock him up now!

I thought you could only negotiate an extension during the final year of a contract?? I know it makes no sense but I thought I heard that somewhere.

Read renegotiation of contracts....they can't "officially" extend a contract until next season for Ryan.

Whereas it doesn't seem the Senators want to be a winning team. Hard to win with a limited budget.
