anyone have a big saw able to cut an 8x8" piece of wood?

I'm making a table and need to cut some pieces of douglas fir that are just under 8x8". I can do it with a couple of cuts on my mitre saw but was wondering if anyone had a bigger saw at home that would do this (e.g. radial arm saw), etc.

Jeff---are you crosscutting or ripping ? Bandsaw will do if you find a big one. Pretty hard to crosscut as the throat on most saws are 14 or 20 inches. If your ripping then anyone with a portable bandsaw mill can do it.

Ever tried to use a handsaw ?? A good sharp one will work

I am cross cutting it. I need the cut to be pretty exact and want to do minimal sanding. Don't want to do it by hand for accuracy reasons and the number of cuts required.

My advice is to take it to Home Depot or Rona and have them cut it for you. They'll charge you $X/cut, but they have the right equipment and you'll be sure to get what you want.

yes, but will the cut it if i didn't buy it there? i would buy it there but they don't carry it

They will definitely do the cuts for you even if you didn't buy it there Jeff, i do it all the time. Don't waste your time at HD either go to Rona, the Cut Shop is far superior. Let's see some pics of this sucker once completed!

Rona has a huge table saw, they are much better in their cut shop then Home Depot.

so no luck with Rona, HD, Lowe's or a few lumber yards around town. Got a couple of other options I am looking into. Someone suggested Algonquin College as they have a woodworking program. Anyone ever been there?

12" non sliding. I could make it work but Pierre at wood select can likely source the wood, dress it and cut it for me which saves me the hassel. I think he has a jumbo band saw which would do the trick as well but would love to see the quality of the cut from that.

Wood Select did excellent work for me a few years back. Trimmed some huge walnut boards for me and did a very good job.

This is a rather large procurement, so I don’t know who you could provide such a tool for use. Honestly, it would be better to buy such a saw for the future, I am sure that you will need it again and again.

Stay away from the cordless unless you are somewhere where you have no power. The Dewalt is the same as Porter Cable. I have used mine for almost 40 years (Porter Cable/Rockwell) 15 amp motor and corded. Purchase a good set of blades---rip and crosscut and take care of the tool and don't tackle a job it was not intended to do. The use of a proper size extension cord also helps--don't use 16 or 14 gauge---12/3 will deliver proper current. A good clamp on guide to aid in ripping and cross cutting is also a good practice to follow.
