Nfl 2012
The Saints may be a distant memory in 2012 after the suspensions that were handed down today by Commissioner Goodelll. Among other penalties imposed, their head coach has been supsended without pay for a year, and they have lost their 2nd and 3rd round draft choices for the next two years. The punishments to be meted out the offending players has not yet been announced. They'll be lucky to be able to field a defensive side!

Wow. Coach Payton should put out one of his bounties on Commissioner Goddell!

Here's an interesting view on why the Commissioner may not yet have punished the players involved.

The strangest comment I read this week was attributed to Brees, who wondered what the justification was for Sean Payton's suspension. I guess he was sleeping through the latest revelations.

I still don't think the Saints did anything heinously wrong. Defensive players have always tried to take out offensive players legally. You don't think every defensive end tries to separate the QBs shoulder when sacking him? If not, that's naive.

Fortunately for who? I do think the punishment was as severe as it was because they flat out lied to the Commish, which he seems to dislike.
Other than that, I think all the panties have to get untwisted and everyone realize this is a man's game, violence is a part of the game.

I played football. I know that it's a hard hitting game. That said, there's a huge difference between playing hard-nosed football, and paying bonuses for intentionally injuring another player. The Commissioner is aware of that difference. So is the legal system. The players and coaches who countenanced this behavior are fortunate that they aren't being charged criminally for conspiring to commit assault.

IMO the amounts of money offered were so small as to not matter. A guy making 2 or 3 million isn't going to risk an illegal play to make $1500. He just isn't.

The bounty money, some as high as $10,000, mattered. If the bounties were of no consequence, then there would have been no need to put them up, or having done so to lie about them. As for the players not having risked their careers by making illegal plays, the commissioner's findings demonstrate that they did just that. This scheme contravened NFL rules to say nothing about their lying about it.

Sensfan63, you're not the only one disturbed by the suspensions. So too are Louisiana lawmakers. http://www.katc.com/mobile/news/la-l...s-suspensions/. Money, it would appear, trumps all.
