Wiping a hard drive
I've finally made a decision regarding a laptop, and it's now on its way.
Im selling my current desktop for parts - i will not be selling the HD with it. Nevertheless, I'm looking for a reliable way to wipe all the data from the hard drive before removing it. Any suggestions?

Wouldn't a full format (not a quick format) do it?
As far as I know the only reason to use another method would be to avoid a full format to preserve something. Interested to know if that isn't the case.Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

If you are really concerned the only reliable method is to take a sledgehammer to it
I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

What jeffc said.
There are programs that will format, write 0's, 1's, random patterns, multiple times to obliterate the data, but if the NSA really wants your data, they can get it.Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

remove the partitions and create new one and run a format after the newly created partition.

I had read of the sledgehammer method - i was just hoping for something a little less messy, at least while the HD is just going to be lying around my house.

You only get out of something what you put into it

Get yourself a copy of Darik's Boot and Nuke (www.dban.org). Instructions are found on the web site. After 32 years in IT with the Feds, this is what I use. Unless you have something that the NSA REALLY wants, this will do the trick.
It's a very useful thing for anyone with a computer to have around. You boot from the CD and it wipes the drive for you (after prompting!). But, keep it in a safe place, away from the kids!
