England/Scotland
I'm going to be backpacking Europe this fall and will be spending some time in England and Scotland. I would love to get out for a round at an old style links course, but do not have the money to play somewhere like St. Andrews, especially as I will also need to rent clubs. Does anybody have any ideas of a traditional (hopefully seaside) links course that I could play, hopefully for about 50 pounds (which will already exceed my daily budget)? I am fairly flexible in terms of location, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

John, the Old Course at St Andrews may be out of your budget range but the Eden course at St Andrews is £40 until October 18th and it is seaside and right next to the Old Course.

It really depends on where you are going , there are a lot of Links style courses on the south west coast of Scotland and North West of England , but they may not necessarily be on your travel route .If you do find a course close by where you are travelling , maybe contact them directly , explain your circumstances (From Canada never played a real links course) with a bit of blagging you never know where it could get you
, hopefully not arrested though
At the end of the day ... It gets dark

There's a course that I saw a couple of times from the train on the way to and from Aberdeen called Stonehaven. There's a bunch of holes that run along the seaside cliffs. The views are spectacular.
It's only a hair over 5100 yards long (par 66), but it has seven par-3's and only one par-5.
Weekday rounds are only £18, an weekends are only £20! And, you can get day passes for £25 & £28 respectively!!
I have vowed to play there when I go back.

I used to live in Aberdeen and know the course you are referring to. I guarantee that it would be a memorable round. If your ball goes over those cliffs there is about a 100 foot drop, so bring an extra long ball finder...
Lots of other courses around Aberdeen, inclunding an inexpensive links (Kings links) course near the football (soccer) gound (Pittodrie), and a bunch arpund the city (Nigg bay, Balnagask, Hazelhead, Royal Aberdeen...etc etc).

Abderdeen is a great place to visit as well as it is close to many castles, not too far from the highlands and very close to the grampian mountains.
Have a great trip, whereever you decide to go...
