So I spent went through rules 1 -4 today on the RCGA Educational site at http://www.rulesofgolf.ca/index.asp I watched the videos and read every rule, read most of the decisions and took the exercises. I made one mistake. An infraction had lost the hole in match play prior to a concession, which I assumed was irreversible. Silly me.

I signed up for level 2 and paid the $50, but I am going to go through all of the material prior to taking the test. I could probably pass now, but I am liking the idea of doing the studying first.

Good luck, you'll breeze through it.

I haven't studied for an exam since my Photoshop classes at Algonquin and that was probably 10 years ago. What's a couple of hours a day at this time of year?

You got that right. I did a 10 question, moderate level quiz and I was shaking in my boots. Got 9 out of 10 though.

9 out of 10 for me as well. Pure luck. Answered the first thing that came to mind.

Did anyone notice a UK bias? I did the challenging 15 quiz and 4 of them were about foursomes. As in mixed two ball.

R&A = No suprise there. I am sure that's as it should be if that is a more common format in the UK.

Yes, the true foursome (as defined in the rules) is a quite common format here.
When played with a man and woman pairing it is often called a 'mixed gruesome'. Usually by the husband forced into it by his wife !!

In the level 2 Decisions exercise questions I found an error where a question gives a wrong answer.

Rule 14 – Striking the ball

    TRUE OR FALSE
A player holds an umbrella over his own head ro protect himself from the rain while he makes a stroke. There is no penalty because he only assisted himself.
    The answer given is:
FALSE – The umbrella is an artificial device and the player was in breach of Rule 14-2 for using it to protect himself from the elements
    From the Decisions:

14-2/2 Player Holds Umbrella Over Own Head When Playing Stroke
    Q. A player playing in the rain holds an umbrella over his head with one hand while holing a very short putt, gripping the putter with the other hand. Is this - permissible?
    A. Yes. Rule 14-2 prohibits a player, while making a stroke, from accepting protection from the elements from someone other than himself. However, it does not prohibit him from protecting himself.
I emailed the Rules Director at the RCGA to get it fixed

I got a reply and the question will be fixed.
I must admit I was concerned that I had missed something. It's not often that something like that happens.

I just found another issue on their RulesofGolf.ca site
Rule 23 (Loose Impediments) states: Except when both the loose impediment and the ball lie in or touch the same hazard, any loose impediment may be removed without penalty.
In the video for rule 23 on rulesofgolf.ca it clearly shows the player removing a newspaper that is in the same staked hazard as the player’s ball.

A newspaper is a movable obstruction not a loose impediment.

Ah, that's a good point. DOH!

Still, this video is supposed to be on Lose Impediments.

I agree. Very misleading. I would let them know.

Incidentally, although I am not in Canada the video examples look to be a good training guide. Quite impressed with the RCGA initiative.

I already have and this is the reply from Brent Mclaughlin, RCGA Director of Rules, Competitions and Amateur Status:

    Brent M:
Be careful when reading the applicable Rule and remember how important definitions are. A loose impediment is a natural object - a newspaper is not - making that a movable obstruction.
    Me:
Yes someone else pointed that out to me.
On the other hand, that video is entitled “Lose Impediments” and at the moment the paper is being lifted the narrator is saying “be careful when moving a lose impediment. If the ball moves …” resulting in my mistake. Either way, it could be done in a less confusing way.
    Brent M:
I agree, it seems strange to have that video there. I've been with the RCGA for over 10 years conducting our competitions and now with Rules included I plan to look at all the educational material and if needed modify - I appreciate and encourage the feedback - so thanks.
Unfortunately they can't replace video as easily as text, but I am sure it will get replaced.

On the upside I am definately enjoying the level 2 online program and learning quite a bit from it! Bonus if I can help them make it even better!
