Very smooth easy 7 iron.....If only I could tell myself that on the course instead of pulling out an 8 iron. LOL.

I'll oust myself as the 8 iron dude!! 7 would be too much for me from that distance and i'd rather take a good swing than try to float something in there. Chalk the distance up to being six foot five 220.

Last season this was a smooth 6i for sure.
I'm adjusting lofts going into next season to fit with my hybrids better, so it will probably end up being a 7i.

Depending on my day - it is between my 6 and 5 iron. And my iron lofts are more old school than current iron lofts.

I play in Calgary, elevation almost 3,500 feet above sea level. On a flat par 3 this summer, 170 yards to the pin, I played a full 5 iron, aimed at left corner of green with slight cut on the ball, came in perfectly, hit 10 yards short of the pin, and rolled up 5 yards short of the pin. I two putted for a routine par. My 5 iron was 27 degrees loft, 37.5 inches long, with a Precision Rifle 7.0 shaft. I was trying for a smooth, controlled swing, which came off exactly as I planned.

Before I read on I have to quote Geoffrey here and agree with him, this is exactly what I would do in this case.
And there's a very good chance the ball is 170yds from where I hit it. Unfortunately it's probably not on the short stuff.
Distance control I don't have a problem with; it's left and right control that is a problem.
I'm assuming though this is from the fairway, because if it's off a tee I'm going with an easy 8i. At least a club longer (which shows another one of my major problems ).

I'm a 4 iron, but Ive replaced my 4I with a 9 wood the past few years Then again, my PW is only about a 90 yard club and a SW I use for exactly that... in the sand cause if I hit a sw from the fairway, i better be within 60 yards
Can't hit an iron worth a crap.... but I am relatively consistent given I hover between a 9 and 11 handicap. Love them wairway woodsProud member of the 2009 OG/TGN Ryder Cup Champions

Not so big, just stubborn...
On a good day, if I stand straight, I am 5' 8 1/2", 195 pounds. But at age 60, I finally realize I have wasted most of my life swinging too hard, with shafts that are too stiff for me. I am building a new set this winter, it is going to have a 38" 5 iron, with a much more flexible shaft, on the order of 290 cpm's.
