Alfredsson to sign with the Red Wings?

I can't believe it, but TSN is reporting it is a done deal.

Confirmed. Big salary increase from 1 million. Also, not a team in rebuild mode to finish off a career. I would do it too if I was in his shoes.

    He's earned it ,
The people in Ottawa will still be fuming/angry/upset/sad , whatever , but no-one can deny what he has done for this city and the Sens
If he believes that Detroit have a better chance at winning the cup over the Sens , then best of luck to him
I personally wish him nothing but the best

This goes against everything he has ever said which is strange and as recent as 6 weeks ago. I think the Sens Mgmt messed this up big time.

Looks and sounds like Melnyk said no I won't spend more than 50 mil., so Alfie left!

Maybe Melnyk realizes spending $5M a year on Alfie for 1 year isn't as good as possibly picking up one of these key, overpriced recently put on waivers players that could be a good fit for the Sens for a number of years. Remember that under the new CBA, the teams only have this year and next to get rid of some of the higher contracts. With the right negotiations the Sens could pick up some key players. We've already seen Lecavaliere, and Briere's names circulating, there may be others soon.

I'm sure there were very friendly discussions between the Sens franchise and Alfie, and there are no hard feelings. Once he retires, I'm positive you'll see him back in this town & arena once again.

At the end of the day I think the Sens will be a better team next year and also younger.... Good for all of the players involve!!

    Not according to Bryan Murray:

Looks like the Bobby Ryan trade was in the works before Alfredsson made his decision.

Sens at this point are not a better team compared to last year...
    In- Ryan and MacArthur
Out- Alfie, Gonchar, Silfverberg, Benoit, Regan
Gone- Noessen and 2014 1st round pick

Not sure how anyone can think they are much improved next year... Or the years after...

They're better. I liked Silfverberg, he's tough to lose, but I think Ryan is better. Only Toews and Stamkos have scored more 5-on-5 goals in the last 3 years than Ryan. MacArthur is a solid possession player that many Leaf fans wished they would've re-signed. Gonchar didn't have a great year, middle of the pack among defensemen against slightly better than average competition. Be honest, Benoit and Regan are replaceable spare parts.

Regarding the prospect and the pick, Noessen is highly regarded, but prospects are lottery tickets - some win, some lose. The 1st rounder may be less than significant in a draft that is less than stellar, where one writer suggested, while still early, the top end was average to below average. If the Sens have a strong regular season and finish high, it could be a mid-20s pick.

I'm not a Sens fan, and I like these moves for them. With Spezza and Karlsson healthy for the full season, this team is stronger than last year's.

    Ryan > Alfie
    McArthur > Silfverberg
Benoit would not have made the team.
    Regin was scratched all year.
Gonchar will be missed on the PP but thats it...he'll be replaced....Murray's not done.
Everyone else should be back healthy and a year older and ready to go.

How can anyone say they are a worse team than last year? Just glad Murray didn't throw stupid money at an old player on the decline.

Ok, look at it this way...
Would you trade Alfie, Gonchar, Silfverberg, Noessen and a 1st round pick for Ryan and MacArthur?
Some might think that's a lot to give up...

And Gonchar actually had a very good bounce back year for the Sens!!!

Believe it or not...yes....we got better and younger. As said, Murray is still shopping for a top 4 D-man. Noesen and a 1st are still unproven.

Its good that Alfie left. He did what Sundin did in his last year. Unfortunately, it wont get him the cup.

He could've done that here too. Alfie has thrown away an awful lot for not very much at all.

His position in this community. People will forgive him eventually, but you're kidding yourself if you think it will ever be the same.

Seriously? If people are going to be THAT hell bent on someone leaving a team for the final year or two with a Cup contender, they have more problems than sports figures.

Over the 18 years in the City, he has done more outside of hockey than most professional athletes.

Obviously if you are a fan of a team, and a player you like on that team leaves for a different opportunity, you are going to be upset about it. But let's be serious, he owes nothing to the city or the Senators.

In fact, he's going after what EVERYONE has always criticized the Euros for not caring about for as long as I can remember, The Stanley Cup.

What is it exactly that the "community" has against him? Can you fault a professional athlete for chasing his dream to win a Cup? I'm not sure how that's valid to be honest.

Everybody always says athletes are spoiled and they play for the money. Now that someone makes a decision to play for the championship in his sport, the thing we say they should all play for, the "community" calls them on it?

    Seriously hilarious mindset..
