Keep in mind this is a small test WITHOUT a swing robot.
AND as Frans says the "issue of include the spec of the ball for it's aerodynamic behaviour during the full flight like spin changes and spin-axis tilt consistancy." and "Once a ball is launched, aerodynamics becomes the primary factor affecting ball flight".
To truly test the balls you would need a robot indoors with Trackman or Flightscope X2 measuring the whole flight.
Interested in anyone else's testing of balls.Last edited by CPA; 06-03-2013 at 06:03 PM.

I used my gc2 to test balls for my personal use a few months ago but didn't keep the results as they didn't seem particularly important to anyone else, with the possible exception that I found that the performance of tour quality balls is consistently superior to 2-piece distance balls. As an older golfer with a low swing speed I was surprised that I lost no appreciable distance with ProV 1 and considering I got better dispersion with my Driver and fairway woods, more effective distance with them. The ProV is vastly better in the short game.
I only tested a few brands, but I believe that it's a general truth that a tour quality ball will perform better for all golfers, regardless of swing speed. As to what ball works best for any particular player, your mileage will vary - lol

CPA just wondering how this data helps you?

Bubba22, I can just speak for myself and I'm not as much of a "numbers guy" as CPA is (I'm still learning what a lot of the data means and how it works together), but what I found valuable (and learned a bit about the numbers) was being able to compare the golf balls I was using with the ProV1 to realize that I got consistently better results using the tour quality ball than I did with the distance balls I'd been using. As I'm able to interpret the data, my spin rates were more favorable and my dispersion and distances were more consistent with the ProV1. Basically, I'm learning what the numbers mean by finding out what the results are. Granted, I'm a bogey golfer, but I hit a lot of balls over a few days and I kept getting better results with a tour quality ball (which wasn't really what I was expecting).

When we get GC2 online playing against other sims I can
choose a ball to give the right or no suckback/rollout and to the metre. Planning to take beers off you Bubba.
In real life it gives estimates based on launch data and will be interesting to see if different ball structure leads to flight differences as commented by Frans.
It has convinced me that of I play a course tricked up for the pros I may need 330s but otherwise I need less spin on ball to achieve roll.

CPA, wondering if you've done an further testing? Your 7i distance is similar to mine and I just recently corresponded with Boz. Which type of Vision ball are you gaming now, gel-x or gel-v?

Bought some PRO V1 and Nike 20XI and the spin was just below 330s. Have been impressed with Vision X3. Using the X3 UV in the open as it is hard to lose and white inside as the GC2 hates UV! Boz sent his range to test including prototypes X4 and BOB.
This is my playing ball, lots of bite;

Thanks CPA! Too bad the GC2 doesn't "like" UV. Do you think the yellow color has anything to do with that, or its just the UV component?

Think it is more the big markings. Combined with the uv a ball on tee gets a red light until markings are hidden.

Thanks for clarifying that! Not a problem as long as I know to keep the markings out of the camera view.

Hi CPA, it looks like your ball speed is way off. To get those carry numbers I'd expect a ball speed of about 165 km/hr.
I did some ball testing using gc2 at my golf pro and I got the following.
ProV1
100-105 mph
16-19 deg
6600-7400 rpm
140-152 yards carry

Actually I would expect more than 165 km/hr since you are listing carry in meters. I wonder if you are listing ball speed in m/s. That would make more sense.

Just did this tonight. Granted I didn't hit that well today, and some of the variation in ball speed/direction proves that. Couple conclusions I had though.
1. Newer balls really don't gain much in terms of ball speed. While a Nike NDX distance won the ball speed, the Tour ix beat out the new Taylor Made Lethal ball, and Penta TP5.
2. The Nike 20xi-S spins HORRIBLY, and it kills distance because of it.
3. Spin on the newer multi layer balls really are comparable to the distance balls on the longer Irons.
All balls were new, and I tried to setup, swing and connect the same on each. Obviously that didn't happen, but point I'm getting at was I was not trying to skew the test by swinging harder on one ball over another. Club is a Adams Pro Black MB 5 Iron with KBS Extra Stiff Shaft

Just read the July issue of Gilf Digest (Australia but presume US version had it) and the results of ball testing were published in graph form.
Looks kike they used a GC2 and swing robot.
Some interesting results.

And remember to keep your balls warm. Remember it is illegal to heat during a round.
