Back Yard Putting Green
I am thinking of getting a back yard putting green installed early next season and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? I am looking to get one that would simulate fast greens and could have a sand bunker next to it.
Thanks

Go for it.
I've had one for almost 10 years, mine is real grass which ends up being more of a gardening hobby then a golf hobby. Although expenisve, synthetic is the way to go unless you want to spend 2 hours of maintenance for every 1 hour of golf.
I've got two bunkers behind my 900 sq. ft. kidney shaped green to catch stray shots and a pond in front of it. I also built a bent grass tee box about 35 yrds away which makes for a surprisingly difficult little par 3 in my backyard. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

I have been dreaming of the ultimate man's basement. I'd like to build a house with a 12ft ceiling in the basement, install a synthetic putting green and a golf simulator. I'd never have to leave!
For now, I am seriously considering the installation of a synthetic green in my existing basement. I just have to convince my wife.

If you want to talk about golf simulator checkout this web site. They sell a simulator pad with 65 sensor for only 549$ US. You need a PC a hitting mat and net to start. This is a great starter kit. If you want the whole kit it will cost you 3000$ US.
I hit balls in my garage. I already have a hitting mat, a net and a PC. I am getting this simulator this winter. You can even put with this simulator. It tells you if you pushed, pulled, hit of the toe or heel. There is one in Ottawa somewhere but I have not seen it live yet.
Look very interesting.

I have 3 good greens and one new green in my backyard
Hello,
I have a 2 acre lot that is mostly backyard. I moved in April of 2004 and have been trying to get a half decent 9 tee - par 3 course. Well I have succeeded. One green is just incredible. 3 will be much better next year. Soon I will have my 18 tee offs.
I used normal filtered top soil. Scott's Lawn and Shade grass seed. (Pencross Bentgrass is a little expensive for me right now)
It takes a lot of work and water at the beginning. You will need a grass cutter that can cut below a quarter inch and lower. This will be the challenge with a natural grass green. Also a lawn roller.
Right now if I want the greens in good shape, it takes abut an hour a green. But when the boys come over for beer and golf...it only takes about 2 hours to do all greens.

Beer - Backyard - Golf - does it get any better.
I hoping to have a half decent tournament next year when the greens mature. Right now my little 9 tee, par 3 has a total of 324 yards. Longest hole is 65 yeards, shortest is 12. Next year will be very different. I shouild have 2-3 holes over 100 yards.
Wooohoo............

I live past Carleton Place. Backyard is roughly 400 feet by 193 feet. Give or take.
Lots of ideas which means lots of work.
I need a gas powered greens cutter. That would cut my time down to less than half.
Land is cheap out here in CP.

bent to blue
I switched my green from bentgrass to pure 100% kentucky blue a couple of years ago. The bent was awesume but way too time consuming to maintain. Even though I installed a 3 head underground sprinkler system in my green I still had to cut it (push reel mower) & roll it every second day to keep it in good putting shape.
Now with my bluegrass green I can't cut it as short and therefore don't use it for putting but it is still good for short game & bunker practice.
Arty, I used to buy my bentgrass seed from Richie's Feed & Seed. It is a bit expensive but the seeds are so tiny a small bag goes a long way. They also sell flags, pins and cups as well.If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

amazing yard... just don't make the same mistake
Note: Don't make the same mistake - I had a small 12x6 synthetic in my yard set me back 950 3 years ago, I did the labour. Then we got a dog - yes i did come home one night from the office to find not one green but 4..... So if you have a dog build the dog run first then the green... my wife still hasn't let me replace it..

Thanks for the advice
I have contacted "pro green" the recommended installer for the synthetic green and have recieved some ball park pricing on an install. What I cannot get is a reference site in either Ottawa or Toronto... perhaps I will get one this week!
I laughed out loud at the dog comments, as I have 2 dogs the fence is going to be key!
Thanks for the advice...

backyard putting green
I saw an artificial green being installed in Russell and so obviously I had to stop. I tried out the surface and I was impressed. They can even adjust your stimp speed. The brochure that they gave me has the phone number 853-GOLF.

There is a one-year-old green at the OAC golf school. A local company did the installation. They adjusted the speed to what the school wanted.
Go check it out.Strive for perfection, but never expect it!
