Traffic/route
I have to pick up my parents at the Ottawa airport this afternoon (their flight arrives at 2:35 and as of now is on time) if everything goes smoothly, I hope to be out of the airport by 3pm (I know, optimistic) but even then the traffic I expect will be difficult.
Anybody have some special transit-strike advice on how to get from the airport back to west quebec? My quiet little village which has never seen traffic west of Aylmer?
I thought I heard we can drive in the bus lanes now, is that true? are there any that would help me?Andrew

If you're going to be crossing back at one of the bridges in Ottawa, I'd imagine you're going to be as screwed as ever. You could always opt to try something a little different and take Hunt Club down to the 416, and take that to the 417 and cross up at Portage. The way you drive, you should be able to make up the time on the highways.

If you manage to get out of the airport by 3, just take Bronson up to Albert and cross at Chaudiere. Should not be too much of a problem I would think. Volumne yes, but at least it will be moving, unlike anything heading south, east or west.....

Well it turns out the flight is cancelled! To make it worse, my sister paid for their flight with a different airline's reward miles, so I have now no way of knowing which flight my elderly folks will be on. There is really only 1 more flight coming in from that city, for 4:50pm, so right now the Ottawa traffic is the least of my concerns. I probably won't be leaving until after 6pm anyways.

What luck you have, you can do some xmas shopping while you wait patiently for some surprise flight to arrive. Or you could drop over to my place for beer and a swift Eagles over Bears beatdown on Madden 09 while you wait.

Best case scenario now is arrival at 10:47pm in Ottawa. Looks like I jinxed myself by posting my worries about traffic here!

Actually, I have a similar commute coming up... any guestimates for how long it'll take me to get to the airport on Friday at 10am from the west end (Lincoln Fields)? I usually set aside 20-30 minutes for going to the airport, but I've never gone there during rush hour. Does Hunt Club get horribly blocked up by traffic due to the strike? I know the 417's no good, 10:30am today was still gridlocked going downtown when I was heading west...

The Hunt Club bridge is always brutal during rush hour. I'd avoid it unless you have no other options.
You may want to consider going down to Manotick and up the back way.Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

I'm considering it... just seems a hell of a lot of extra clicks to save myself a little traffic. Fargin' strike.
