The entire idea of what distance one hits a ball with whatever club I find has always been kind of a moot point. I mean each player will hit the club he needs to get it to the distance he or she requires. It has nothing to do with being macho or anything else. I always find it funny when someone comments on the fact that I used one or two clubs more than they, who cares as long as it got there!! I admit that hitting longer is often a benefit but even ask longer hitters to give up some distance to hit straighter and most would prefer that. I am not a long hitter but seem to do OK

    Drive: avg 220-230 3 wood: 215 2 Hy: 200-215 3 Hy: 185-195 4Hy: 175-185
    5Hy: 165-175 6i: 145-155 7i: 140-150 8i: 130-140 9i:115-125 PW: 100-115
SW: 80 LW: 60-75 and when I add an extra wedge the AW is 80-100.

I think you just made his point.

    A poll doesn't mean squat.
To suggest that the results are indicative of those you read these boards is plain silly.

The fact is that lower handicaps mean fewer misses regardless of how far you hit it.
    A 21 misses more then a 12 who misses more then a 4.
That applies to every aspect of the game.
You can't lower your handicap just because you're long and vice versa.
If you say you hit it 300 great..if you can even better.
If you use an 8 from 170 and pull it off than good for u.
I still don't believe that is normal.
As for me, I DON"T hit it 300 and can't imagine what my index would be if I did cuz I rarely have to hit anything greater than a 4 wood.

Depending on the conditions I would hit 6 or 7 iron.

Interesting posts. How do you measure the distance for each club? Flight and roll or flight alone? I thought that the pros used flight...

With 38 percent using a 6 iron. Do those people use stiff shaft or regular flex.

I'm also hitting stiff but I often question wether I should be using regular flex or not. So if a considerable amount are using a 6 iron stiff to hit 170 then you would think the shaft flex would be correct.

I can't speak for others but I would hit an easy 6 iron for 170 yards, I have rifle 6.5 shafts in my irons so I guess that would be considered fairly stiff. I am not a super long hitter like some on this site but I do O.K.

    (a) In 2008, these two terms are relatively meaningless
    (b) it doesn't matter anyway

I am a 3 Handicap. I would have to hit a hard 6 or a very easy 5, probably have to cut the 5 up high... I use R flex steel shafts.

I think a more important question would be "What is the loft on the iron you use from 170 yards..." because I know that my 6 iron isn't the same loft as yours...

So who cares what number is on the sole of the club.

Then there would be a whole bunch of people asking, "what is the loft of my X iron".

Also the clubmakers would be saying "just because an OEM states that the loft is X, it doesn't mean it is true, because they can be incredibly out of spec."

If the loft on a wood or hybrid is the same as an iron, do they go the same distance?

By limiting it to the number on the sole, essentially eliminates a bunch of additional questions.

Since you are a nice low HCP ... go back to page 3 discussion and let me know if you are well represented on the chart.

Well I did some practicing last night with the pure contact monitor and some golf balls from my bag that I didn't want anymore, I had one of the guys that work at the indoor driving range give me yardages to hit to and one of the yardages was 167. Well I knew I would probably have to go with a easy 6 but I took a 7 instead and came away with a 165 carry yardage on a normal swing. So I tried to swing a little more aggressive with the 7 but the yardage went up to 173,175 and 172. It seems that 167 was between normal and aggressive but the shots sure felt good coming off of the club. My lofts are definitely stronger than the older clubs, my 7 iron is 33 degree loft and 37.5 length. I think I'm getting a little longer with my irons because I've been working on my legwork the last 2 and a half months and it's paying dividends.

I agree 100%, but that is why it is pointless to ask what club you hit from any distance. My 7 is not the same as your 7, so how can we compare or get any meaningful info???!!!

Many years ago, Cobra claimed to have the "longest" irons in golf... that was because they changed their PW to 45* from 48*...

I never unerstand the point of "how far do you hit your ? iron..." questions...

From 170 yards I will hit:
    1- a cut 5 iron
    2- a low trajectory 25* hybrid
    3- a hard draw 6 iron
    4- off a tee I can hit a 7 iron sometimes...

    Does that help?

    Let's add one question...

What club do you use that hits the green at least 66% of the time from 170 yards?

.......Boy would that be a loaded question since most golfers are lucky to hit the green in regulation 55 percent of the time and that's including wedges, nine irons and other shorter clubs. So you can imagine how few times they would hit the green with a 7,6 or 5 iron. Maybe you would mean what club would you hit 170 yards 66 percent of the time.

agreed. and on that note, for me it's a 7i. Assuming normal conditions (no severe wind, horrible lie, yadda yadda yadda).

Also, to answer the question posed earlier, my 7i rings it at 33* loft, and I play it w/ an Accra Steel 5.5 shaft @ 37.75in.

Under normal conditions, I'd use a 5-iron off the tee, pitch out of the woods with the 8-iron and then chip onto the green with a wedge!

I’m very surprised that the majority use a 6i/5i and only 5.5% use a 8i. 8i come 6th in the list. I would have guessed that the most popular club at 150Y would be a 7i

Strong 7, or a choked down 6.....perhaps I should use the words 'gripped down' 6-iron?
