Thread: What to hit from 170yds out...

Yesterday I took my launch monitor to the indoor driving range to see if I could reach 170 with a hard 7 iron, well I was getting 163 to 165 so I figured that's about right but I saw a couple of newer range balls and used them, I hit 167 and 169, O.K. now I'm wondering what if I use good balls that I would use on the course so I grab a pro V1x (scuffed) and a pinnacle extreme out of my bag and swung aggressively with the 7 iron and got 177 and 179 of carry. Now I'm wondering if getting my yardage from these stupid range balls is the cause of me blowing the ball over the greens when I really hit them flush???? Now what???

My irons have the "Traditional Loft Specs", not the jacked down lofts like the new OEM irons have. Hence what I hit from 170 today is one less club than I used to hit when I played my TM 200 irons.
I know one thing, you would be hitting one more club from 170 in 3-5 C tempatures! I know, I play in those tempatures! My opinions are my own, I do not follow others.

I am the other 8-iron.
The chart is pretty darn close to my distances, except for the LW and SW where I am a little shorter.

I fall all over the place on that chart, mostly in the 'short hitter' or 'Average Hacker'... kinda makes me wonder why I even play the damned game! Also makes me wonder about alot of the claims made because many of the guys I play with make claims of hitting 8 and 9 Irons 170 while I am either pulling out 4 Iron or 9 wood. I should take a look and see what club they are really playing instead of feeling inadequate (leave it alone guys!)

I'm with you Dan, if you're on the green in regulation, then who cares how you got there? Drive for show, putt for dough.
How about a poll for putting stats. Harder to fudge (not saying that anyone in this forum would).

Now I've played with both of you guys. John, I'd have to say your average drive is more than 270, 300, probably not, but definately more than 270.
And hoolio, I'd say the same thing, but I have seen you launch wedges a mile. I'm fairly long with my irons and I've played with you on days where you were hitting one to two clubs less than me (my 6 to your 8).
Not sure if you guys realize how far you hit the ball, but I have yet to play with anyone that can hit the ball on average as long as you guys."A life lived in fear of the new and the untried is not a life lived to its fullest." M.Pare 10/09/08

Smooth 7 or a knock down 8. Those back left pins would be callin for the hard 8.

am I the only golfer that can't hit a iron any further than I can throw a 20 pound block of cement????

It looks like your woods are in line with your driver, but your irons keep a 10yd gap which is odd for the extra distance you are getting out of your driver.
That is easy. No fear. The only thing you can learn from decelerating is how to decelerate.
LW 95 yds.Back at it.

I find that the lads focus on the putter more than my actual game therefore the abuse is directed at a my equipment as opposed to my abilities
There is a method to my madness.
On a related topic, Bugsy was asking me the other day if I thought a a laser range finder would be a good Christmas present for you. Since I knew that you and I hit the ball a similiar distance I suggested that she might want to consider a microscope instead - I can get a great deal on a really nice used 50x Leica microscope from work
