Above average courses
Hi everyone,
Just moved to the region. I've played a few courses now and haven't had much luck finding anything better than perfectly average (if that). Everyone tells me that Eagle Creek is great but I'm living about 20 minutes east of Ottawa so it's quite a drive to the west end of the city.
I'd appreciate any thoughts you guys might have with respect to the higher end public courses. While I'd love to find something near home, I'm not opposed to travelling if it's worth my while.
Thanks!!Last edited by Crippler; 07-29-2006 at 08:25 PM.

If you're in the east end, try Outaouais. It's in Rockland. Its in superb shape, particularly if you play the old course (south and west). Be advised though, their fees are a little pricey if you go at the wrong time, so double check their rates before booking. Well worth the money though.

I'll play a round at Outaouais with you. They have deals on Monday and Friday, during their 8:00 am shotgun starts. I think it is 40.00 to play there. The South/West combo is a great 18 holes.

Closest one to the east end is Stonebridge.
Loch March is also in Kanata and is about 15 minutes closer than EC.

Try Nation, it's very close to you & a lot of fun.

I just realized right now that there aren't an overabundance of higher end public courses in Ottawa. When I was living there I used to play Eagle Creek and Outauoais whenever I got out. I always found it hard to get on courses like Emerald Links which is also a good course condition wise.

Crippler--welcome--would you define higher end public courses please?
Does the 2nd hole-n-one come easier ?

Outaouais and emerald links are about as good as it gets in the east. Nation is pretty good but not top shelf like eagle creek, loch march or the marshes.

I live in Orleans, East end, and find there are not a tonne of great courses in the east End. Outaouais & Nation are probably the best, however Hammond & Casselview are both in better shape. Green and soft all around!!!
If you want to stay in the east those are my recomendations. If you wanna go for a drive try Les Vieux Moulins or Le Sorcier in gatineau, Or Eagle Creek, Loch March, The Meadows or Canadian, or Emerald or Cloverdale Links; All of which are a considerable drive to the South or West ends of the city.

Sorry for the delayed response.
I'm not sure I can offer a great definition of "higher end" - we all just know it when we see it. I suppose what I'm asking is for the best public courses in the area in terms of design, maintenance and service. High end courses are the ones that I bring clients or out of town guests to in order to impress them, or those that I "must play" when I visit a city.
When I'm in Toronto I always try to get out to Angus Glen. In the Muskokas it's Taboo and Rocky Crest. When I'm in London it's Forest City and FireRock. If someone asks me for which courses in those areas I would recommend I don't even need to think about it. I'm not recommending these courses on value or the cost of the twilight deal, but rather on the courses themselves.
It's clear that Eagle Creek is that course in Ottawa, but there must be a few others. I thank everyone that has responded thus far. I think you've given me a great list to start working on.
Thanks.

Based upon your response, stay away from Nation or Hammond. They are weekend warrior courses, although Nation does have an interesting, albeit short layout. I would say in the East end, Outaouais is your course. but there is a much better selection of upper-end public courses in the weat-end. The Marshes is a great track.

You might try--Heritage & Mont Pellier on the Quebec side--good mountain courses or if you want a treat try Royal Laurentien--its about 1:45 Hrs. I know its a drive but you wont be disappointed.

I find it funny that anyone would rank Emerald Links at a "Higher End" golf course. Either low expectations or you never have played a great golf course before. I barely rank it above Pineview in terms of quality and layout. Quite a few dinky doglegs and the staff is below average IMHO.
The only courses I would rate as above average would be:
The Marshes
Eagle Creek
Stonebridge
Predator at Greyhawk
Kanata Lakes
Loch March (Great conditions but I hate the course)
There are a few others that I haven't played that I've heard good things about (Outaouais & Hunt Club).

Living in the rockland I am intimate with the east end courses. An overlooked course that no-one mentions is La Cite in Hawkesbury. This is a gem of a course and a real bargain (less than $30 on a weekday). The greens are beautiful and the fairways and bunkers cut strategically. Think Nation but with fast greens and without those bogus par fours.

Crippler, inspite of all the 'input' we have all given you, as a new person to the region the easiest way to put this is there are not many 'High End' clubs around that aren't private. You say 20 minutes East of Ottawa so I will assume you are down near Cumberland, Rockland, Navan or near Bourget. The closest thing that comes to a high end course out that way that is open to the public is Outaouais (just my opinion) but have a look at their website www.outaouais-golf.ca' There are quite a few middle of the road clubs that aren't far from you and you can look on the map of 'featured courses' on the splash page when you log in here. Lots of challenging golf courses around the area so don't let us give you the impression that there isn't good golfing around the Ottawa/Outaouais region, because there is.
Good luck in your hunt for that gem you are looking for Crippler!Proud member of the 2009 OG/TGN Ryder Cup Champions

Try Le Sorcier you won't regret it
If you're 20 minutes east of Ottawa you're likely in Orleans like myself. In our end of the city I'd say Le Sorcier is the best course around.
I can get there in 25 minutes from Orleans by taking the Cumberland to Masson ferry and then jumping on the 50 heading west.
The staff are excellent and the greens and fairways are impeccable. The only knock I'd have to give it are the tee boxes. Some of them are in pretty rough shape.
