Backstop Impact Net - how far from walls?

Hi, new to the forum, and couldn't find an existing thread on this subject.

I'm in the process of setting up a driving net in the garage. I plan to purchase something from either P2P or West Coast netting, that will hang from the ceiling (11 ft, 5 in).

My question is: How far away from the room's walls should the netting 'hang', so that balls don't damage the walls as the net receives the impact? I'm thinking something like 12-inches, but would prefer less if I can.

This will be Phase 1 of an eventual budget simulator.

It all depends on how tight your net is attached. The tighter it is, the less deflection will occur; but the more bounce back you'll get. My net deflects about three feet when I hit my driver. If I tighten it any more than that, it bounces back past where I'm standing. But all nets will vary greatly, depending on how they're attached.

WOW, thanks. 3 feet is way more than I thought it would! I'm planning to just hang it loosely, without any tensioning. The material I'm planning to use is going to be quite light (1" or 3/8" netting), as it's only a temporary solution. Thanks

If it's just hanging loose, you'll have to add weight to the bottom. Otherwise it will deflect a lot more than 3 feet on driver hits. Mine is attached along all four sides, with plenty of slack. If you want something that'll take up a foot of space or less, I would suggest hanging something like moving blankets behind the net. Basically, anything really heavy, that will absorb the shot, rather than just the netting slowing it down. But that route will be much louder than just netting.

I have the westcoast woven polyester netting tightened with about bungees every foot on the sides and two feet on the top with no weight at the bottom and 2' from my garage door. There are very few wrinkles in it . I put a strong netting right behind it and the bounce back is almost nothing and it will help the screen last much longer. So far almost three years and going strong.
Also, if you use Almostgolf golf balls, you dont even need an imact screen and can place it much closer to the wall.You just use white fabric or a sheet. If you need real balls just put memory foam behind your impact screen .

With real balls I wasnt hitting the door and now I use almostgolf balls. I never put it any closer so I dont know how close you can go with real balls. Whatever you do a net or memoryfoam or,both will help you.

I want to get as close to the back wall as possible. I'm thinking of setting the screen at 6" - 8", and hanging a heavy carpet between the screen and wall. I have picked up used industrial floor mats for the carpet. Heavy rubber on the back, and carpet fabric on the front to minimize wear on the screen. Has anyone tried something this tight?
