How Cold Does It Have To Be Before You Pack It In For The Season?

Ok let's see who the "DIEHARD GOLFERS" are here.

At what tempatures do you pack it in for the season?

Myself, I play until the snow flies and the course closes for the season. My course usually stays open until the first of December if there is no heavy snowfalls in November. But once that first one hits in December they pull the pins and shut er down til spring.

My buddies and I have played golf when it is 3C, with some wind chill added in. Heck we have played golf when the water hazards had ice on them:laughing:

So tell us, when do you hang em up for the season?

My first year as a member at a course in Ottawa I was on the course the first day it opened, first to tee-off. At the time it was 2 degrees C and raining. By the third hole it started to snow. They came and took us off the course on the sixth hole. The balls were becoming snowballs as they rolled on the green. Had they not kicked us off my buddy and I would have finished.
Coming to London I get an extra two weeks on each end so I expect to play until the end of November maybe December. That is if the rain lets up. The course was closed last week for four days and with the rain today, it may be closed again.

I play as long as there isn't snow on the ground.. In 2001 a buddy and I joked at a new years eve party about playing in the morning because there wasn't any snow on the ground.. We had too many drinks in use but oddly enough we both showed up the next morning and played 18 holes.. Damn cold and the ground was frozen solid but it was a good time..

You need an ARK at that course you belong too! :-)
I am pretty sure they set a closing date at Greenhills and they stick to it regardless of weather. You might have to come and join THE DARKSIDE over at The Trails in late November :laughing:

Closing date is set for November 26th so I don't have to go "dark" too early.

As long as the club does not vibrate after I hit the ball! :-)

The issue is not so much the cold as it is the degree of emptiness of my wallet.

You diehards know the real truth. Only a foot of snow or a restraining order can keep you off the course. One can easily play when the temperature is 1 or 2 degrees and there is no wind. We used to do it in Halifax when the snow came late. One year we played through until February. If the wind is up or it is colder (freezing or below), then not only is it not fun, it's dangerous. You can break or severely strain a wrist.

No divots once that turf gets frozen :laughing: :laughing:

I remember one day in early December (a couple of years ago) my buddy and I get to the course around 8AM. Frost delay, so we sit around for an hour. Pro finally goes outside, checks the putting green and lets us loose!

I hit my approcach shot to the first green and watched as it BOUNCED TEN FEET IN THE AIR and off the back of the green.
Well a golf ball will do that when it lands on a FROZEN GREEN!:laughing: I stuck my ball mark tool into the green and it was SOLID as a rock about a 1/2 inch down! That green has a few small pine trees behind it, that block out the morning sun. So that is why it was still a bit firm compared to the putting green.

By the 3rd all the sun had been on the greens enough and they were back to normal.

One other day 5 of us were out there playing. The water hazards had a good coating of ice on them. One guy came up short on his 3rd shot on a par 5 which has a pond in front of the green. We stood there and watched his PRO V roll all the way across the pond as the wind pushed it along! The young guy in our group went to the edge of the pond and kneeled down and picked it up. Hollered out "Hey I found a PRO V on the ice" :laughing:

WE DO SOME CRAZY S**T DOWN HERE IN THE BANANA BELT!

Untill hell freezes over (or just before).WE play untill they close the courses and then we still go out on a nice day-10 3 in. of snow.

I'm a freakin whimp! I packed it in the day after our fun golf day! officially my 10th game of the year! :faint:

Well , I for one will agree that does sound very whimpish.:laughing: I will play up until the day that my feet are too cold to go out anymore, hate cold feet, then it will be time to hibernate and cuddle up beside the fire for the winter!!:-)

Five of us teed er up at 3:45 this afternoon. On my way to the executive course (we play it as it allows us to get the full 18 in before dark. Plus we score better there :laughing: :laughing: ) I was driving in some pretty decent snow streamers. As I arrived at the course parking lot one of the other guys was there, and he laughed as I pulled up!
We got teed off, and it did snow on and off during the first 9 holes. Nothing major though. I did however find out that my fingers can get numb pretty damn quickly now. I think it must be those blood pressure pills I take. So I am going to have to invest in a hand warmer for my left hand. Ever try hitting a full golf shot with numb fingers on your left hand? Not good :laughing:
By time we teed off on the 10th it was pretty dark off to the west. By time we teed off on the 11th the snow was falling hard. By time I putted out on the 11th the snow was building up on the ball as it rolled across the green :lmfao
Time to pack it up boys and go home! But hey at least we gave it a good attempt. Had some laughs too. Beats sitting around the house doing nothing.:thumbsup

For me, it's when it gets so cold that I can't feel my fingers..... any mi****s with numb fingers are really unpleasant.

Also, I'll play in the rain, or I'll play in the cold, but the combination of the two (raining and 5 degrees) is too much for me. Any reasonable threat of rain in early or late season, I'm hiding where it's dry and warm.

I think for me it depends on where I am golfing. For example, Eagle Creek closes this month and Northern Bear here in Edmonton where I plan on getting a membership is the same. So I guess I'll golf from when it opens until when it closes.

I golfed the other day and it was just above zero and the wind was blowing. It wasn't very enjoyable to tell you the truth. I guess I'll try to get out a few more times but anything below 5 degrees and wind is not my idea of a good time eventhough I've done it before.

:laughing: :laughing: So does anyone out there have a laptop that would not mind being cuddled by a nice warm fire for the winter!!!:-)

All my family have their own laptops, it is a terrible sight to see everyone together in a room, but really talking to someone else. While watching tv. Major multi-tasking.

As for the winter. I will continue to go until the clubs locally close. Unfortunatly it was fairly early last year. :( I may just have to travel further afield if I get desperate. :scratchch

I'm giong to be playing in niagara on saturday and sunday and they are getting 1/2 a foot of snow tonight!!! Its only 6* C outside, but we are still playing, should be fun

Weather forecast is just about right for this annual event.
5-7C, 70% chance of rain with winds gusting to 40 Klm/hr :eek: (WIDE OPEN COURSE)

Now it is a matter of one or two things.
How low can my group go, or how much ALCOHOL can we consume in 18 holes :laughing: :laughing:
I am thinking we can consume more booze far better than having a low score!:-)

:laughing: :laughing: Hopefully not for the event tomorrow. Could have used it yesterday though!:-) I found it tough to stand over the tee shot with 3 wood in hand while there was snow being driven into my eyes by a 20 MPH wind :lmfao Hit a FROZEN ROPE right down the center:-)
