Sure do. It's a pocket sized paperback and it only cost $4 from the RCGA. mpare had a copy of the decisions in his cart on Sunday. It was more like a Harry Potter book!
I carry the small paperback rules book in may bag.. Went through a couple before I figured out to keep it in a zip lock bag so it doesn't get ruined in the rain.
I don't.
I think the first time I ever saw someone pull one out on the course was jvincent during our match - at least it wasn't anything I had done he was looking up :).
I should likely read up on the rules someday soon ....
Play the weekly rules challenge http://www.ottawagolf.com/contest/index.htm
Only during tournaments. Never needed it though.
Both Rule Book and Book of Decisions.
i carry the mini rules book fro mthe rcga (the 4$ one being referred to by Dan) ... never had to use it though. (and of course, needed it several times before carrying it)
yer joking right? ahhh....no...lol
I agree that one should follow the rules, and I could see having a copy with you if you were playing in a competitive environment.
But I wonder what percentage of golfers would have a rule book with them - I would guess less than 5%.
I also wonder what percentage have ever read the rule book - again my guess is less than 5% - I have not and have been playing what I like to think of as golf for almost 40 years.
But I did print out a copy today, and if it doesn't put me to sleep I will soon be one of the group who have read it.
I carry it because a guy I used to golf with quite frequently was had a suspiciously liberal interpratation of the rules. With his game it didn't matter much at all. He'd smash a ball OB off the tee and take a drop out there where it finished after it had bounced all the way down the road.....stuff like that.
Essentially I bought it so that I could show him some of the rules to help him out...
I always have an extra copy in my bag as well. Like Dan said, for $4, why not? I'm happy to give away copies to the people who want to learn more as I play with anyone of any age and talent. I know the rules but it's nice to be able to 'go the extra yard' and hand a determined player a rule book once in a while out of the blue.
I don't and don't forsee a time when I would. I appreciate that many who frequent this forum are very competative but that's not my game. This spring in MB I asked a long time playing partner to step aside when he was holding the flag on a putt of mine. It was maybe only 20 feet, I was on the green and it was a down hill so likely would have carried past the hole. Not only was he on the line of the putt but his shadow was obscuring my clear view of the putt. I asked him to move and he became very upset, not then but later and chastised me for "disciplining" him. Needless to say I don't play with him any more. If a partner wants to learn more about the rules I'll lend him my copy or better yet refer him to this forum. The only guy I am trying to beat is me.
I agree completely with Kiwi---if I have to go out and "play" by the strictest meaning of the rule---where has the play gone? There are lots of times when just common courtesy (as in Kiwis case) comes into play and its a rule somewhere. I am too old for that kind of "play". I am sure that most of us here know when and where to play by the rules. Granted it may take a PGA official to explain it to us sometimes. :)
Do people play poker while not following the rules? You'd lose less money.
What other games do people play (often for a few $) where they waive "inconvenient" rules?
I guarantee that the rule book is not being exactly enforced in pick up hockey, basketball and touch football to name but three.
True. But do you play for a few sheckles or just for fun?
If someone is playing just for fun, do as you like. If you want to compete, the rule book settles disputes.
I absolutely agree, I just thought you were responding to Big Mac where he's saying he just plays for fun. Golf doesn't have to be taken seriously each time it's played. That's up to the person playing the game and what they're looking for while playing it.
I think I didn't read his post fully. My bad.
First off - I'm shocked by how many votes for "yes".
I don't carry a rule book, but in some cases I wish I did. The only problem I see is that there wouldn't be enough time to make a ruling when you need to. Maybe it's not as difficult as I make it out, but how in earth do you find exactly what you're looking for, read the ruling, understand it, and share your information with your FC.
Or do you play two balls, and make the ruling later on?
Usually it's pretty easy to find the appropriate rule.
But yes, if in doubt, just play another ball under rule 3-3 and sort it out later. Remember that 3-3 only applies to stroke play.
In match play 3-2 applies and you need to make a claim before teeing off on the next hole.
Doh! Not sure how me looking at 2-5 got translated to 3-2 from my brain to my fingers.
