Took one out for a test drive today. Shafted with Diamana Blue Board.
Interesting to say the least.
Par 5 480ish:
Played in a scramble today with some friends. When one of my team mates put one out in the middle of the fairway I knew I could swing away. Aimed between two trees at the dogleg and hit a somewhat low draw. Ball was out in the fairway about 175-180 in. First swing, some work left to do. :)
Par 4 360ish:
Second swing, decided to tee it higher after seeing the low flight on the last hole and caught it low on the face (and when I say low, I mean LOW) and nubbed it only a few yards down the fairway. More work to do.
Par 4 360ish again:
Taking in what I learned from the last two holes I decided to tee it somewhere between the last two attempts. Smoked drive, with a somewhat higher trajectory but pulled down the left. Was left with just under a 100 in. Starting to see some improvement.
Par 4 360ish again:
With a very nasty hazard down the right side, decided to aim down the left edge. Getting more comfortable with the club the swings were getting better. Bombed a nice fade down the left side, had about 50 yds left. Now where getting somewhere!!!!!
Par 5 470ish:
With another ball in play by my team mate I aimed down the left side of the tree lined fairway trying to carry the corner of the dogleg. Hit another nice fade which just missed making back into the fairway, had about 210 left.
That was it for the front nine. I was somewhat pleased and eager to keep going on the back. Although the swing left me somewhat on the back nine, I did hit one more good one. It was a par 4 424 yds. We had about 135 left after a nice fade for the dogleg right.
Thoughts:
I have not hit the Sumo (which is supposed to be the standard of bad sounding square drivers), but this was not all that bad sound wise. Somewhat tinny, but not ear aching loud.
I think I still have some work to do on the set up, but the club is rather forgiving. I'm not totally sold on the square concept yet, but maybe with some more work. The one I hit low on the face, the ball went next to nowhere. I've had other drivers give a bit more distance when hit in the same area. But when the swing was bad on the back nine, the driver did stop the ball from getting into real trouble. The rights never went as far right as other swings with other drivers would've. The club supply plenty of feedback. I knew pretty much exactly where I hit every ball which is always a good thing.
Like I said, not totally sold yet, but perhaps with a few more rounds under my belt with it I may change my mind.
Almost forgot, distance, when struck well was right out there with anything I've ever hit. But off-centre hits don't travel nearly as far as other drivers. But when mis-hit the ball doesn't venture nearly as much off line, but distance suffers severly.
