Optimal shaft for driver?

One of my driver shafts broke, so I'd like to buy a high performance shaft for it. Im using a Callaway Razr hawk 9.5 head. Normally I shave the driver shafts down to 44.5 inches, stock lengths are too long!

At golftown I hit into their simulator and obtained some stats.

Swing speed: 101-102 mph
Ball speed: 150 mph
V launch: 18-20 degrees
Backspin: 4500-4900 rpm
Smash : 1.40-1.45
Carry: 250 yards

I was in jeans, dressed shoes, not much warm up so I could hit it harder but this is to give me an idea of where to start.

My shot flight is mostly fade to right, or push right. What annoys me is that I get no roll off my drives. Would a shaft help with more roll or is that the club head? I hit up on the ball and they go very high. I used to play a 8.5 head but cant find those anymore.

Thoughts?

I believe your backspin is too high , which is why you get no roll , as for the rest , i'm sure a clubfitter would have the cure to your ill

Pablo, don't be fooled by the "high $$$ == high performance" hype. There are likely lots of shaft options that will help you out for a lot less $$$.

That being said, spin is more about loft and swing than shaft. Remember, your 9.5 is probably not a real 9.5. Your swing is also pretty upright, well compared to me anyway, and that combined with a fade is going to result in a lot of backspin.

I'm surprised that you are getting 250 carry with those launch and spin numbers.

What shafts would you say are good enough for me? I prefer light shafts rather than heavy ones. Is a Diamana shaft overrated?

If it works for you, then it's not overrated. That's the problem, you need to actually hit them to figure out if they work for you.

Forgot to mention, if you are hitting it too high, you probably want something with a stiffer tip section and a higher bend point.

That's just general guidance of course.

It's so annoying to carry 250 and end up with a 249 yard drive! :irked:

i'd go with one of the AXE shafts been thinking about pulling the trigger on one for awhile now. seem to be the best bang for your buck. based on your launch and spin i'd say you could hit up on the ball a little more, i suffer from the same problem. we should be contacting the ball on the upswing with the driver.

I inputed your #'s into my launch monitor using Ottawa sea level readings and outside weather conditions, 150 BS, 19* LA and 4800 prm backspin. Take note that by doing it this way, it defaults to a square clubface at impact with a level angle of attack. Also missing is where on the face impact occurs,static loft and face angle measurement to determine clubface angle at impact.

I come up with a line on the graph that shoots up to about 55' in the air at the 150yd. mark, stays there for 35 yrs. and drops to the earth at the 239 mark and spits foward to 247 total.

First thing I want to point out is your outstanding Smach Factor !!! Right up there with Rory and Tiger !!! Only thing is, with a 1.45 SF, you should be hitting the ball a ton further ! You are missing out on roughly 23+ yrds. simply by lowering your backspin by a mere 2000 rpm's. Bad news is, your problem is swing related, a defenite negative angle of attack here judging by the amount of spin.

No combination of shaft/ head /ball will yield a reduction in spin without severe trade offs.

Considering the shaft is broke, to fix the initial problem you have no choice but to buy new equipment. :)

Downhillslider gave me a fitting last week. The Razr Hawk 9.5 club I am using was measured to actually have 13 degrees of loft! Also I occasionally hit up on the crown of the driver which adds more loft, so it's no wonder I'm getting no roll. Gonna try a Wishon head that's measured at 10 degrees to see if it helps.

You definitely hit a very high ball with driver.

This is why I play a Wishon 919 Thi driver which has been digitally measured to 10* by Wishon.

Callaway Razr Hawk Tour 9.5

0.5* open face

11.5* in the center of the face

13.5* in the optimum contact area of the face ( just above the center line )

14.5* where Nokids makes contact 95% of the time, just bellow the crown.

I should point out that he is in the always in the middle of the face, very consistant, just a little high, er, a lot !

I'm playing the stock G20 shaft and it just works. Sometimes its just that easy.

So I'm carrying the ball mostly 250 now, hypothetically, if I keep hitting the ball the way I do, same swing speed, what should my new carry distance be with 2 degrees less loft?

Can't calculate this with simply a L A decrease because the spin would change also, not to mention the difference in head design ( Wishon ) with a slight higher and more forward center of gravity.

Your swingspeed is in the 112 range and not the 101 you said last year, so I'm not even going to guess.

Next step is the launch monitor.

You could input some hypothetical numbers and see the difference but to be 100% sure you'd have to know the exact numbers as suggested above

Statistically signifigant results?

Two full rounds with my Wishon 10.5 head and Matrix shaft. Hit 20/28 fairways (71%) as opposed to my 40% avg that I kept track of all year. Flight is lower with very little side spin, and I'm seeing actual roll after my ball lands which gives me an extra 10-20 yards EASILY. I'm one happy client, thank you Les!
