Dead Solid Golf. Club and ball LA.

Has anybody seen or used one of these? Who makes the sensor?

One of the local golf shops had a used Dead Solid Sim for sale at only 5 grand including I think 30 courses. At one point I was quite keen on it given the price but never did get to see it as he did not have it assembled. He also had an earlier version of the sim that did not have the LA feature. My understanding is that it is shadow sensor based. Upgrading his used one to include the LA was just way too expensive so I stopped at that. I wish I had seen it though. The software certainly looks dated however.

The sensor uses Fiberbuilt grass panels but I couldn't find any close-up shots to see what or who might have made the sensor. Price is also way too high for an outdated graphics engine, but that's the norm in this industry.

There is a guy selling a used system with LA on Ebay for $15,000.

In the listing, he mentioned that it was $45,000 new. That's in the same ball park as Full Swing golf and about golf.

There is an indoor Full Swing Golf sports bar not too far from me and I'm trying to get some guys together to go play 9 holes. I would like to get an idea of what a $45-50k simulator is like.

There is a local golf course near me that installed the Dead Solid Golf simulator recently, I think installed he spent around $40K. It uses the overhead lights to detect the swing info. I only played on it once, it does show launch angle.

    Welcome to the forum ckcsm.

So what did you think of it at the time? i.e. accuracy, graphics, etc...

I'm in a golf league at this course and some of the guys are playing indoors now; with snow on the ground for the last 6 weeks or so, this is a good option. I recently got the Optishot and realize this is a basic system, but feel it is good winter practice also.

The Dead Solid simulator seemed pretty accurate, but a topped ball would register almost the same as a good shot at times. The graphics are good but not great; they didn't opt for HD projector. I don't have much to compare to as I have not played on other equiptment. The graphics on my Optishot with the laptop are just as good if not better. The putting sensor seems pretty accurate, but its hard to sense the break on the green. I'll have to check it out again.

    Hope this helps some.

That is interesting that a topped shot did not show up correctly since it measures ball launch angle.

I suspect it might be due to the fact that the ball sensor is too close to the ball impact area.

What about flop shots with a wedge? If you don't remember how it went, perhaps you can try that the next time you go. Since wedges tend to go under the ball and maybe get detected by the sensor before the ball, I'm curious to know how the system would handle that situation.

    Thanks

It may very well be a unit that didn't have the LA built in. Like I said, the local one that I was going to look at had an older circuit board that didn't have the LA. Those would not show topped shots. You needed to upgrade the whole bosrd to get the LA.

Good point. It might have just been showing the calculated LA.

40K is a lot of money for that graphic quality and sensor pad technology but we must not foget that at 40K they're probably building all the encloser, wall, impact screen, they are also including flooring, projector, computer, sensor pad putting sensor pad, toutch screen and bla bla bla...

so yes it's expensive but the 10K to 20K diference in price we see is the same as the ne we see between sensor pad technology and high speed cam technology. Add a verry high quality graphic software and here's High definition golf.

You whant to see impressive graphic engine then go see the videos on this page

Did they give you an insight into how their spin camera works?

And how much is "very very expensive"?

Starting in the 40's. The spin camera does require ball marking I believe. They are real picture based and are working on different camera shots as we speak.

they're using the same kind of high speed camera technologie as about golf and sportscoatch

I was told that they developed it first and About Golf copied.

too or three diferente camera are measuring ball speed, launch angle, side angle, back and side spin. Sportscoatch also measures club face angle, speed and path.

See...those graphics DON'T impress me. They're just actual pictures. You can't have cameras that fly along with the ball, trees can't blow with the wind, water can't move. And the physics of the ball are limited as it's not reacting to objects in a rendered 3D environment...the ball flight and collisions are based on a corresponding 3D map they have to create separately and store behind the scenes.

I'm sure these types of software have come a long way and are decent now, but I played on one years ago that was a joke. Of course things looked great (they're real pictures after all!) but the ball flight looked downright silly at times. Give me 3D rendered imagery so you can fly along dynamically, etc. any day. (And I think graphically the E6 software almost looks real!)

Okay - I watched the video and have to retract the part of my comment about water not moving. They implemented that. I stand by the rest though.
