impressive list
Welcome to the forum Jimmy.......... :newbie
You have posted a very good and honest list for your first post here. I hope to see more of your thoughts during the coming months as we can only wait until 2003 when our season starts up again, unless we go visist Myrtle Bob (friend now living in Myrtle Beach).
I will see you at Golf-O-Max on December 14th for our first cleaners game of the silly season.
btw Jimmy .... good use of the smilies!

Handicaps
To me, handicaps indicate a better score than your average score. Because you use the best 10 of the last 20 scores, they will be lower than your average.
For example: If I have 10 scores near 80 and 10 scores near 90 my average is likely to be near 85 for the 20 games. This means you will only be able to play to your handicap, 50% of the time.
This fits right in with the average golf story. Your handicap is better than your game!Tee it up, knock it down the middle.

Typically, over 100. I have broke 100 only once, came close a few times and have shot 140 as well.

How long is a piece of string?
Sorry, just wanted to see if Spidey would think that is a stupid question or not.
My game fluctuates. As described by others, I get upset during a bad round and it affects the rest of my game. The mind-set is the toughest part of the game for me and I need to find ways around it. Oddly, very few people have good solutions for this problem.

I haven't even posted in this thread. What's that all about?

Personally, I don't think there are any stupid questions.
Page one. And it was a joke (more at myself for posting an obviously stupid question), not a shot at you.Last edited by Curious George; 08-14-2003 at 03:27 PM.

I'm still figuring out Handicaps. I understand they differ from course to course. I also understand that you need to golf 5 times a week to figure out what your precise handicap is.
That's about all I understand about them.
But I golf around 100 fairly consistently...Zeemine

If you want to calculate your handicap, just start saving your scorecards. There's lots of software and websites that can calculate your handicap if you have your scorecards.

You need only 5 scores to have a handicap.
Your handicap factor does not differ from course to course.
However, the number of handicap strokes given or received will vary depending on the handicap conversion chart at the course being played.

I voted 11-15 because I'm currently just under 14, but if I keep playing like I have been it will be up around 18 again before I know it .

I could play tennis here without joining a club. All I would have to do is buy the equipment and head down to the local public tennis courts, which are free to anyone who wants to use them.
I do not agree that golf is becoming an elitist sport to enter. There are plenty of cheaper courses to play around the country. Not everyone needs to play a $100 + round golf course.
I do agree some basic etiquette of the game, and some basic rules would be well worth every new player learning.
Oh yeah, there are tons of guys who "Bomb it 300 all day long" Hmmmm I only see one or two a day hit it that long off the first tee at the course I work at!
My opinions are my own, I do not follow others.

Currently sitting at an 18.7 which is a far cry from the 23.5 that I was sporting part way through July of this year. I'm living breathing proof that seeing a teaching professional can seriously pay off.......

I started keeping track this season and found that it really helped. Last season all my rounds seemed to be around the low 90s and cracking into the 80s happened about once every 3 or 4 rounds.
The season started this year similar to last year but I've gotten my cap down to 13.6 right now and my last 12 rounds have all been sub 90 (knock on wood). I actually like the HDCP system for keeping track of your scores and building some confidence by having positive results to look back on.Even I've never heard of me

finished at 9.8 last year, was as low as 7.1, im mr. inconsistent, can shoot anywhere from 75-90 on any given day, your right about what you say, ive golfed many times with new people and they ask you your handicapp and you feel like a liar cause you played so bad, but like they say you should only shoot your handicapp or below 20% of the time. I like the people with low handicapps from playing the same crappy course all year long and then use it as an excuse after.

With respect to Equitable Stroke Control, at what point does a golfer stop counting triple bogeys and starts counting double bogeys? The handicap FAQ's page says 19, but there seems to be a grey area that I (a 20.1 hc) may soon fall under.
I have 3 or 4 aweful holes per round. Triple bogeys or worse. When i calculate my handicap using triple bogeys as my worst score on a hole, I get a hc of 20.1
Should I calculate my handicap using double bogey as my worst score on a hole, and if that hc falls under 19, I should switch to that method of scoring?
Or do i have to use the triple bogey scoring until that hc goes under 19 before i can switch?
Thanks. You only get out of something what you put into it

I just took my five best scores from last year and instead of giving myself a triple bogey on bad holes i gave myself a double bogey. My handicap changed from 20.1 to 16.9
So do I have to change to the new scoring for 10-19 handicappers? You only get out of something what you put into it

Confused too...
I'm confused too. Like NoKids, I have been dilligently keeping my handicap based on my actual scores. I currently sit at 20.1 as an hc. I have never used ESC.
Could somone explain in simple terms how I do so and what benefit it provides me and / or my playing partners? And when asked what your handicap is, do you use the figure with or without the ESC, and when (i.e. is one used for tournament and one for common daily use?)"If profanity had any influence on the flight of the ball, the game of golf would be a lot easier than it is" - Horace Hutchinson (1903)
