The Amityville Horror (remake) was really good - and it successfully scared me.
Also, it's not scary, but Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a great Steve Martin/Michael Caine comedy.
There's also Fargo and The Big Lebouski - both made by the Coen brothers.
Anything else I was going to suggest has already been said. hahaha"I reject your reality, and substitute my own!"

saw Memento on that list at the top, make sure you get that one, its amazing, and one of those "twist" type movies that you really need to pay attention to.
Also, not necessarily hidden gems, but classics you may not have seen are:
American History X (one of my favorite movies of all time)
Murder in the First (Kevin Bacon)
The Professional (called Leon in Europe)
Primal Fear
Van Wilder
and some you have probably seen, but are fun to watch again:
Any Adam Sandler or Chris Farley movie from the 90's (Waterboy, Mr. Deeds, Billy Madison, TommyBoy)
Godfather Trilogy is a great waste of time on a plane...kills 10 hours if you can wtch them in a row
Indiana Jones trilogy (with the new one coming out you will need to brush up)

Try "Vanishing Point" your probably too young but it was good back in the early 70s.
"The Gauntlet" Clint Eastwood flick--you wont believe what happens to a house---movie magicDoes the 2nd hole-n-one come easier ?

If you're watching The Godfather trilogy, do yourself a favour and skip number three. It's atrocious. Sophia Copolla is a director, not an actress.

Here is a bit on the Director http://www.apple.com/pro/video/dumidi/
Do not know if it will make mainstream theatres, but I am sure will be available on DVD................"So many moving parts. Your whole body's moving, and this ball is not moving. It's standing still, laughing at you." Tiger Woods
