A lot depends on your price range. Check out the following page for examples.

    http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/s...ders-C562.aspx

If prince is no object, get the Pinseeker. It's the big-daddy of rangefinders and will pickup pretty much any target. Note that the version with slope is NOT legal for use in tournament play.

Having said that, the Yardage Pro Trophy can pick up pretty much any flag that is under 200 yards. For "big" targets (trees, bunker, people) it's usable to up to 300 yards.

I find rangefinders most usefull sub-200 yards so that you can pick the right iron so the trophy is fine for most people.

What do you think of the Yardage Pro X500 versus the Pro Trophy

    I've never used that one.

One advantage for the Trophy vs the X500 is that the Trophy has 5X magnification vs 4X on the X500 which makes it a little easier to pick out the flag sometimes.

I'll second the Busnell 1500. Picked one up at the start of the year, and won't leave home without it now. Very accurate and easy to use. Easy to pick up flags from virtually any distance you'll need. Takes all the guesswork out of your approaches, par 3 shots, layups to hazards, distance to the end of a dog leg, etc. Even usefull to get a distance on the group ahead, to make sure it's safe to hit. The 1500 isn't cheap, but I have no regrets in getting it. Another small bonus is that it only takes a standard $4.00 9V battery. I think some other rangefinders take a $20-$25 battery.

How long does the battery last? Typically do you need a new batter every game, or does it last for several games?

I had to replace the battery after about 30 games this year.

Do you know what the major difference is between the bushnell 1500 and the Yardage Pro X500?

I have had the yardage pro 500 for at least 3 years. Battery (9 volt) lasts for a full season. It is a little large compared to the newer models but works great!

Are your typical yardage markers that far off that one needs a laser distance finder (at sub 200 yards)? Just curious...

I don't have one, but I often wish I did when playing courses that I don't frequent. Not so much for the shots into the green, but more for tee shots, and layups after an errant drive.

I wish I had one today. Was blasting my new TP Burner and would really like to have had an accurate distance. Plus on a few holes at Nation the distance isn't obvious

On a well marked course, no. But many courses don't have all the sprinklers marked or in some cases have very few sprinklers.

It's also much quicker to just walk to your ball and laser the flag.

I had a bushnell yardage pro trophy 800 for about a year. It could hit a building accurately 800 yards away. It claimed to be +/- 1 yard from 5 to 800 yards. Practically, it could pick up the flag once inside 200 yards. It only really worked for me in the afternoon, because it requires a steady hand that only comes to me after I've had a few...

I miss it a lot when I'm at a new course.
