    Hitting the ball too high

I'm a 20 handicap and need about 2 months in the springtime to get my golf swing back where it was the summer before. It ain't that bad this season, I managed to hit the ball pretty straight without too much mis. However, I'm far from having the distance I had last summer and my ball flight is way too high.

I'm using my usual setup (ball slightly back in my stance, stance slightly closed) which usually produces a straight shot or a mild draw. The problem is that my 5 iron shot looks like my 7 iron from last year and my 7 iron shot looks like my 9 iron from last year. I'm currently hitting my 5 iron around 145yds and I usually hit it 165-170. I have the same problem with my 3 wood and driver.

What could cause this? Am I getting flippy with the wrists? Am I trying to help the ball get up? I actually feel like I'm hitting down on the ball (my setup helps this). Maybe my hands are trailing the club head? Should my hands lead at impact?

On a more positive note, my chipping and putting has never been better...

Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

you are adding loft through impact. so yes you are getting a little flippy. Your closed stance could also be blocking you out. hard to tell without vids. But you probably dumped the load too soon or are coming in too high and throwing it away.

    anyhoot, lets try something wild...lol...
put a ball 2 inches left of your left foot...thats right...way forward...no tee. now take out your 5 iron...good luck!!!

sounds impossible but it is possible if you keep your left wrist flat and/or right wrist bent back throughouth your stroke. The ball might be pulled or hook if well struck, but the goal is to make solid contact in this condition.

    just for fun!

Yes, it did. It helps to complete the followthrough and "push" the ball towards the target.

I tried this drill and really noticed a difference on my iron shots. Long irons are hit more solidly and the short irons seem to have straighten out (I have a tendency to pull the short irons). I liked it so much I'm going to introduce a practice swing into my pre shot routine mimicking this drill.
