    Why are the courses closing?

With the late start this year, why would they close before the snow begins to fly?
I cannot figure it out. Shut down the food service, keep the washrooms open, done!

Umm, because there's a lot of prep to do before the snow arrives?

If they don't get it done in time the conditions next spring will be terrible and take a long time to recover.
Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Our course covers the greens, which must be done before the first snow. Lots of work to do to get a course ready for the winter.

Clubs (mostly private) that cover their greens IME have temporary greens in front.
Also, with the “extra work” that needs to be done, how can some courses continue to be open until it snows?
Run a skeleton crew and keep the green fees coming. It was a short season…why not make up for lost revenue?

Go play Vieux Moulins or Champlain, they do not have the same standards as some clubs so usually stay open until the snow arrives

Not sure private clubs would generate much revenue in November with guest fees.

I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t. The point was made that the courses who choose to cover their greens need to close before it snows.
My experience was that they don’t close…they create temporary greens.

Economics. Why would a course stay open when incoming income is very low and you still have to maintain it?
Labour in the pro shop and on the course.
Mowing fairway and greens. Washing and disinfecting carts.
    Blowing leaves.
    Equipment using gas
    Emptying garbage cans.
No marshall on site- What if someone has a an accident or a health condition.
Course is wetter and people not following golf cart pathways.
    Liability insurance?

    And possibly a lot more...

Even though there was a late start in Ontario I am willing to bet that most courses made more money in a short few months than they did pre-covid.

Ding, ding, ding…we have a winner. Best thought out answer so far.

On the Gatineau side there are a few. Le Terminus has 5 screens, a full restaurant, pool tables, about 20 of them, dart boards. The same owner also has a second place in Aylmer in the shopping mall. I think its called Putters, pool tables etc.. but only has 2 screens. They are well runned safe clean enviroments i highly recommend. In Ottawa, Pineview, Rockland Golf and suspect Golfomax is still in business.

    Message from Metcalfe:

Weather permitting, the course will be open until at least Sunday November 7th. We will continue to take bookings 7 days in advance but based on weather may announce closing with only a couple of days notice.

Pretty normal for them. Always open for a week or two past Halloween, then close to do their season-ending work before the snow comes.

I have tried Pineview, Golfomax, and Mulligans. Parking is a pain at Mulligans.
