New rule changes for the 2005-2006 NHL season
Credit to tsn.ca for the following:
Some of the rule changes that will take effect for the 2005-06 NHL season:
- Allowing the two-line pass (no red line) like international hockey;
- Reduction in size of goalie equipment;
- Using the AHL crease and limits on goaltender puck handling;
- No tie games; using a penalty shootout after overtime; After a five minute overtime, three players will be selected from each team for the shootout. If still tied, it will then be a sudden death shootout;
- No-touch icing;
- Bringing back tag-up offside;
- Move nets back two feet towards end boards;
- Reducing the size of the neutral zone;
- A team that ices the puck cannot make a line change prior to the ensuing face-off;
- Officials will have the discretion to wave off icing if it is deemed to be the result of an attempted pass;
- A player that instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game will receive a game misconduct and automatic one-game suspension;
- Zero tolerance on interference, hooking and holding/obstruction
- Delay of game penalties for any players shooting the puck over the glass in his defensive zone.
Thoughts??

It would be like allowing an offside pass in soccer. It gives the attacking team an unfair advantage.
- A player that instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game will receive a game misconduct and automatic one-game suspension; GOOD
- Zero tolerance on interference, hooking and holding/obstruction. GREAT, but we'll see if it actually gets called that way, especially in playoffs.
- Delay of game penalties for any players shooting the puck over the glass in his defensive zone.FANTASTIC Anybody who can shoot a puck through a 6" space between a goalie and a post from 60 feet away should get a penalty for shooting the puck over the glass on purpose.When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

Love it all, except for the goalie puckhandling restrictions which are not specifically defined anywhere yet. That is just an "anti-Brodeur" rule.
As for the discretionary icing, that's a great thing. Last thing you want is to discourage the long-bomb pass by having icing on each missed attempt. It's a needed adjustment, and should work very well... Also, how often does icing get called because some guy missed a pass in his own zone and the puck slid all the way down? That just slows down the pace of the game.
Anyways, I'm just pumped hockey is back...

I agree with the new rules as they will help speed up the game and make for more of an "open game". However, I am not crazy about limiting the goalie with the puck. As far as I'm concerned, if he goes out of the crease to play the puck he should be fair game. It should be up to the goalie to decide....
The whole icing thing is good. Without the 2 line offside pass there will be many long passes so this rule actually makes sense. Without this rule in effect, the game would be really slow.
