    Single (one player) golfing

Why are Ottawa golf courses so unfriendly to single (one player) golfers?
I usually play late in the day when courses aren't as busy but yet I still get the impression that the courses
simply do not want my business.

There is even a course in Ottawa that charges the full golf cart price to single riders which I believe is to discourage us from playing there.

To allocate one cart and one time-slot to a single player makes less revenue than having 4 players paying for the same (kind of common sense). If I was owner of a course, I would charge full cart. The question should be the opposite, find a course that rent 1/2 carts and bring your business there.

Yes I only play at 1/2 cart courses.
One player revenue is better than no player revenue.
On weekdays when my friends are working I have no choice but to play alone.

Assuming you are physically able, you could just walk.
Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

I've booked several times in the past few weeks as a single and have had no issues whatsoever. I walk and almost never take a cart but in terms of booking, etc. no issues and treated well.
I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If you are a single and riding in a golf cart late in the day as you suggest most courses are likely to offer a twighlight rate anyway. In this market there are what, 75 courses within 2 hours of Ottawa? Maybe 100. If you don't agree with the full price of cart rental for a single take your business elsewhere. Golf in this market is very inexpensive when you compare it to other big Canadian markets. Walking twilight rates are really cheap especially great value this time of year when you can t off at 5 and still play 18 holes.

I play alone all the time at the course I belong to. Super easy to get on as a single and fly around. Not that I don't enjoy company but sometimes it's nice to play alone.

The fee for the single player might not cover the cost of having a cart out (+ wear and tear on cart and course). I play single most of the time and walk the course yet since my course charges 1/2 cart ( $9.00 twilight rate) then I take one once in a while.

    From the Metcalfe Golf website:

    Metcalfe Golf Club Cart Policy
    • Metcalfe Golf Charges by the seat for cart rentals
    • If there’s an odd number of riders in a group a single rider will incur no extra charge
    • If a golfer refuses to have someone join them they must pay for the 2nd seat on the cart
    • If a non-golfer is riding they must pay for their seat on the cart but not the green fee
There are several reasons for not allowing multiple single riders in a group:
    • There are multiple costs the club incurs such as charging, cleaning and wear & tear
    • Allowing multiple single riders would mean we may run out of carts on busy days
    • Extra carts on the course means more wear & tear on the course

agreed. I've never understood the fascination with carts. I don't know anyone that couldn't use a little more exercise in their life.

for me it is not a fascination, don't be too quick to judge seemingly able bodied people. If you met me you may wonder why I always ride. I can barely walk 9 since I have bunions, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, screws and plates in my feet

well of course if you can't walk, then by all means, but for the vast majority of people they can walk, they just choose not to. My dad is 76 and still walks his course 3x a week (and sometimes carries his clubs as well)

Just curious, if you rent a car do you expect to only pay one fifth the cost if you are only going to use 1 of the 5 seats?

Let's leave the judgement of others and why they choose to ride or walk out of this discussion going forward.

Even if someone simply prefers to ride, it really is nobody's business. What do you care what others do? If you wanna walk, then walk, if you want to ride, the cost is a factor. If you have nothing to say about the cost of carts or the treatment of singles then your comments are off topic.

Seriously, looking down on others and criticizing them, or challenging them to defend or explain themselves is just rude. I remind you all... this is NOT Reddit.
