    NHL Nicknames..

Since I couldn't wait for the other thread (jerseys number) to get to 99. I though I one will get me to mention him first.

The Great One - Wayne Gretzky

PS. try not to overuse "The Next One" and jinx any youngsters' would be pro career

When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

Very good but not the best. Pat Roy, Marty Brodeur to mea are better.

I always wonder why people consider Patrick "Wife Beater" Roy better than Hasek. Consider that Hasek played for BUFFALO and won some 6 Vezinas (best goalie award) and Roy played with good teams in MTL and COL his entire career and only won 2...

Marty Brodeur isn't done yet, and my opinion of him is higher than that of Roy, but he also benefits from only facing 20 shots per game in Jersey....

Tretiak is the only person (IMO) that is even close to Hasek.

    Dan

PS - I'm Czech, so of course I LIKE Hasek better than all the above, but my opinion of him as a player comes from stats analysis and accomplishments. No goalie can win the Cup by himself, but Hasek won the Olympic Gold pretty much single-handedly in 1998.

You have a point, I guess I'm just going by how many Stanley Cups the other 2 won, and you have to have great goaltending in the playoffs, as we all know here in Ottawa. But yeah he did win all those Vezinas and the other 2 did certainly have better teams behind them which helped, so yeah Hasek was good, but I don't know about the best ever. One goalie to look out for is Roberto Luango.

Luongo is definitely a potential legend. He faces the most shots of any starting goalie in the NHL and has always had a tremendous save %. His GAA will never be good until those young stud defencemen in Florida reach their potential... Under the tutelage of Jacques Martin, that team's defensive numbers will improve dramatically soon, and Luongo will finally get his recognition...

I do agree that the Dominator is one of the best if not the best but Roy won 2 cups in MTL with mediocre teams. No powerhouse there. The 1993 cup was won because of Roy. He had a better team in 86 but if I am not mistaken, it was his rookie year. Not too shabby to win the cup in your first year.

I prefer Brodeur then Roy (Actually I hate Roy. he is an egocentric SOB) but Brodeur has always had a very strong team in front of the net.

See, I am not disputing Roy was good, even great. The 1993 Cup was won only PARTLY because of Roy, as a team can not win 0-0. Someone has to be scoring. Therein lies my problem with people rating goalies based on team trophies like the Stanley Cup.

Hasek at the Olympics is a different story, because there were shootouts to decide the Gold Medal game.

Glad that you at least hate Roy though. I totally agree with you that he's an ego-freak. His stunt in that 8-0 loss to Detroit that ultimately saw him traded to Colorado was an absolute mockery of sportsmanship and professionalism. Almost "Theo Fleury-esque".

Beating his wife didn't raise his value in my eyes either...

Which Canadiens goalie was it that was given "Redlight" as nickname? I know their media were tough, but that label took the cake...

Yep, the red light was on so often that he constantly had a sun burn on the back of his neck.
