Just a little more moisture for nice green courses!

It's only the snowiest March on the record since 1924.. I think we have enough moisture this year. Actually with all the cold-warm patterns , I think the greens could be bad this year. Cross our fingers!

I haven't even posted the spring openings calendar yet, as there is no news to report. Last year we had a couple of courses open already and a bunch more in the first week of April. This is brutal.

It is what it is. We once played on March 8th, jumping over puddles at Rideau Glen in Kemptville. That was a record since I have been doing this (since 1996) This may be the record for latest start. It's hard to be sure, but I don't remember a season in that time when no courses opened in March. Safe to say that will be the case this year.

The condition of uncovered greens partly depends on how long there was solid ice at ground level. Bent grass greens survive longer than poa annua grass but the hope is that all will be OK because there was no solid ice formation until later in the winter. With courses spraying their greens in the late fall with various fungicides, that kind of damage should not be a problem.
The good news is that after tomorrow's freezing rain storm, temperatures will be in the 8*C to 10*C for the balance of the week..

Really? I've lived in Ottawa for most of my life and a snowstorm in the first of week of April is not that rare. Here is a picture of what I was doing in the first week of April in 2015.

Courses such as Prescott, Mapleview and Calabogie typically open earlier than the closer ones, often while there is still some snow around. Yes there are still storms in April, but usually at least one or two open in March for sure. Also by now I have usually got estimates for opening dates from many courses, but it's not something they can call as yet, so yes this year is different.
