    Titleist Spining?

I sent a question to the Titleist Customer service asking if they place the shaft with the spine of the shaft in the proper place. This is the answer I got back and from the response is.................

'Puring' or ‘Spining’ is orientating the shaft into the head in a
predetermined location based upon the predetermined stiffness at that
location of the shaft. We find the orientation where the shaft oscillates
straight up and down and then align the graphics along this orientation.
The USGA Rules state that the shaft must perform the same no matter how it
is orientated into the golf club. Therefore, if a club was to perform
better resulting from "spining" the shaft, the club would be illegal.

    Just some usless FYI.

I think that guy had some poor info. If I remember watching "What's in the bag?" the SST company (famous for shaft puring or aligning) have a trailer they take to tour events. So I don't see how that would be deemed non-conforming. Anybody else know anything to add?

Theoretically, your driver shaft should be symetrical, that is, regardless of how it is installed in the head, the results should be the same. With the few well made shafts that are out there, this statement would be correct, however, the reality is that most shafts have a plane or two(NBP, S1) or more, that are more stable or unstable than others. When oriented in the former positions, the shaft will perform at its optimum, and conforms to the rules of golf. There are some club makers who will orient the shaft in a position where it encourages a fade or draw bias. This orientation is non-conforming.

Therefore, if a club was to perform better resulting from "spining" the shaft, the club would be illegal. So this statement could be true of false depending on where the "spine" is orientated. If it is spined in the 12, 3, 6,or 9 o'clock position, it's fine, otherwise it is not. But, how does anyone know? Generally, the OEM's spine nothing, so the location of any more or less stablility is just luck or bad luck.

When I do mine, I use my NF2 to locate the NBP, then a laser pointer to find the FLO planes and then my frequency analyzer to see which of these planes is the stiffest. The first takes about 5 seconds, the second about 2 minutes and the third, about 30 seconds. But, the influence on performance may be priceless.

BC MIST, do you and Mr. Cantin do spining the same way? I am thinking of getting my Fuji spined. And just curious how much it costs?

Here is some infomation I have re Spine Alignment.

"In February 1999 the USGA Implements and Ball Committee modified its rule on golf shafts

which required that they "bend symmetrically in all directions". The reason for the change is

that it was proven to them that today's technology would not support manufacturing of a shaft

with these "symmetrical properties" without raising prices to unrealistic levels. The USGA

concluded that it would "not be against the rule" for club (and shaft) manufacturers to "orient

the shaft in the clubhead such that the shaft appeared to bend symmetrically in all directions". "

If you have a raw shaft that you want spined and FLO'ed before installation, just PM me.
I live near Greensmere GC and if you are in Stittsville, you are only 15 minutes away. The price will be right.
