US Open
Anybody have any early picks? Or are people going to wait until this weekend's tournament is over first? My picks are Padraig, he's due for a break out in a major. Toms, he is playing great golf at the right time. And Fred Funk, fear the turtle. As per my Masters post I do have to stick Sergio in there.

Man, that's soooo tough to call, especially on a course like Pinehurst #2. It's the toughest tournament in the world to win. The way the USGA sets up these courses, everyone from Sluman and Pavin to Woods and Singh has a chance. IMHO, whoever is able to dial in the long irons over the 4 rounds will be right there on Sunday.
I would really like to see Daly pull it off, and then go back and do it again at St. Andrew's. He's been playing really solid the last couple of years. When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

Tiger, Phil, Jim Furyk, Darren Clarke, Retief Goosen.
Ernie's playing like crap. Vijay's not on track. Mike Weir is close but not in top form yet.
I think a European has a great chance this year. Jiminez plays awesomely in majors and is very close. Sergio could gel that week, but it would be a fluke. Harrington has a steady game that's great for the US Open. Cabrera, Bjorn and Scott are playing well now too.

My one peeve about television coverage, especially majors, is that they don't show the extended field. If my favourite golfers aren't on the leaderboard, well I want to know how far back they are! So what if Love isn't in the top three, show me his good shot for the day and show me that he's at +3 tied in 28th place, fcol. I don't give a carp about watching the two leaders pace the 4th tee backup while eating bananas and scowling at photographers.
This is especially true for international golfers. If I'm watching in New Zealand, I will be a h*lluva lot more interested if you show me a few shots of Michael Campbell. 'Murican TV!!!! You know it's amazing that the US Open has qualifying sites overseas, but they don't require the broadcasters to show how the foreign players are doing.
Yep, if Tiger Woods is in or near the lead, I'll be watching a bit more closely, but I want to see "the Tournament", not "the Leader Show".

Do you know how difficult it is to get a tv crew through that crowd to a hole 16 to get the shot of DL3 when the leaders are on hole 10. Pain in the arse. That's why they don't do it.
They have staionary cameras set up through out the course. I know in the tounaments I've been to they put it in spots where they can see 2 or more holes. IE. At Oakhill they had a camera between the 8th tee and the 7th green. So if DL3 is teeing off they may be filming the putt on 7. And they had a camera on the Green on 8, but it was in a tower and could film almost 4 holes. Teh camera can only film one thing at a time. So they focus on the leaders or one of the big 5.
It's just the logistics and the ratings.

Allright, it starts tomorrow, who's it going to be??
I say my big chested lefty friend Mickleson, book ending the '99 Open. That'd be sweet. Minimal rough but tough greens makes for a -7 winning score.
My dark horses are the two Angels, Cabrerra and Jiminez.

I'll go with Phil. I could see a guy like Fred Funk or Scott Verplank winning too, someone who hits it very straight and hits a lot of greens.
If it happens to rain every day, I wouldn't be too worried about hitting the greens, I'd be worried about hitting the fairways, 3 inch rough is tough by itself, it doesn't need to be wet at the same time. You miss the fairway on a longer hole and you're laying up. Par would be a great number to shoot.
I'll say that -5 will be roughly the winning score.

1. Vijay
2. Woods
3. Scott
4. Garcia
5. Goosen or Mickleson
and not in that particular order, but these are my picks for the top 5. Wouldn't that be a great leaderboard!

The scores seem to be brutal. It looks like the shorter more precise players have the advantage. At least for now!

How scary is Pinehurst? Watching pros who can spin the ball not be able to hold greens is just unbelievable.

Looks like this course has badly beaten up a lot of top pros.
Paul Casey +15
Jay Haas +12
Ian Poulter +9
McCarron, Kelly, Leonard, Campbell, Verplank +6
