    More distance with Driver

    Hi,

My Taylormade burner 2009, 10.5, regular shaft driver gives me 215 yards presently, I would like to get 20-25 more yards.. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

Driver distance at is most basic level is a combination of launch angle, ball speed (dictated primarily by swing speed), and spin.

Have you had any assessments done of your numbers?

Why stop at wishing for only 20-25 more yards?

I guess it's possible that you could magically pick up 20-25 yards with a driver that's better suited to your swing, but it's pretty unlikely.

The most obvious suggestion is... swing faster! Have you taken any lessons? Perhaps a pro could find something in your swing might unlock some additional swing speed. Alternatively, you could start some golf-specific training during the off-season. Find a TPI-certified specialist and get an assessment of your physical strengths and weaknesses and have them prescribe a program.

Thanks, I'm 56 yrs old, 6' 190Ibs and would be very happy with extra 25 yards. I have taken some lesson but did not help and swinging harder just does not work. Usually Mess it up big time.

Well, without an idea of where you need to improve, it is not that easy to make any suggestions.

Do you tend to hit the ball straight with a trajectory that you are happy with? How far does the ball carry and how much roll do you get?

I hit the ball pretty straight 75%, 15% Slice and 10% hooks. I carry the ball 195 yards and rest is roll. I will
take up your suggestion and get some stats of my swing. Another things I can't figure out is I hit my 7 Iron 165 yards but driver only 220 Max.

With a 165 yd 7-iron, you would seem to have the swing speed needed to hit the driver a bit further. Have you ever tried impact tape to see where on the driver face you are making contact?

I'm the opposite,......I hit my 7 iron 140 yards and carry the ball 230-235 with my driver.

I didn't say swing harder... I said swing faster. I think most people when they try to swing harder will screw up their swing mechanics and/or 'tighten' up which actually results in a slower swing. Swinging faster requires either better technique or or better strength / conditioning... or ideally a combination of both.

The fact that you hit your 7-iron 165 and your driver only 215 is interesting. Hitting it that far with a 7-iron would seem to indicate that you should be able to hit it MUCH further than 215 with the driver. I'd really recommend a lesson. A pro should be able to help you figure out what's going on and hopefully how you can fix it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Time to get some lessons and some stats assessment.

I agree with this based on my recent struggles. I was hitting fairways with my drives, but was hitting short (even for me) without a lot of carry distance. So for my mechanic "tweaks", I slightly weakened my grip and felt like I swung with a more upright & armsy followthrough. My swing thoughts changed to "slightly weaken your grip and swing shape like Bubba". Not sure what my swing looks like from a 3rd person view, but that was my feeling.

Now.....I didn't see you mention what your ball flight was like so I don't know if you are similar to me. I basically wanted more distance via more carry. You may be happy with your current ball flight.

I've never taken a lesson myself - so this is just what has helped me through trial and error. Whatever changes you decide to do, don't forget how to hit your old short-but-straight drive just in case it doesn't work!

How long is your golf shaft (before we get to flex, etc)? I see so many people playing shafts that are too long for the level of consistency in their swing (or too short, once in a while). I've found my sweet spot at 44.5" playing length and anything longer has me all over the place and losing distance since I can't keep it "in the wheelhouse" throughout the swing. I got way more control and way better/consistent distance off the tee once I made that slight tweak.

Hah, depends how bad the first driver you had was. I had a hand me down walmart driver that someone was almost able to bend in half. After a fitting I gained about 30 and I started being able to find my ball lol.
