relief of casual water in rough beside fairway?
On Friday playing a fun match with buddies, when my ball landed in casual water in the rough about 180 yards to the green. A tree was about 20 yards ahead of it and to my left.
I took my stance outside the casual water's edge to the right and drop the ball one club away. My buddies disagreed saying I could only move backward and not improve my line to the green. Please I would love to get the ruling.
Thanks

you need to take the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole whichever direction that is. From there you have one clublength to drop the ball. You can even move from the rough to the fairway if that is the nearest point.
I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

It may well be that the nearest point of relief was to the left of the water.
