Unplayable
Hey Guys,
I am wondering what are the conditions that would make a ball unplayable?
I was in a situation where I would have liked to take a penalty stroke and take my next shot from two club length away but no nearer to the hole.
Thanks.

You can declare a ball unplayable at any time, even in the middle of the fairway or on the green. One stroke penalty. 2 club lengths no closer, not one. Or go as far back as you like keeping the point where the ball was in line with the flag or replay the last shot.
Here's an example of when you might use this to your advantage... You are three inches above the hole on a steeply sloped green. Your putt misses and takes off down the hill. You are now 30 ' from the hole. You could take an unplayable and try the 3" shot again, (with a penalty) which may be a better option than putting back up the hill.Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

The rules can often be used to your advantage. Most people only consider how they penalize you so things like that can get easily missed.

Just remember, in order to invoke either option 'b' or 'c' of the rule, you actually need to find and identify your ball.
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

The one location where the ball CANNOT be deemed unplayable is when the ball lies in a water hazard.
Option "a" in Rule 28 is the usual stroke and distance. Players should keep in mind that if they make a stroke when the ball is in a difficult lie, and then realize that they now need to deem the ball unplayable, option "a," stroke and distance, is no longer available. There is no regression in Rule 28, beyond where the last stroke was made.

Just for the fun of it and this is NOT for certified rules people, what would be the penalty and procedure if a player DID deem his ball unplayable in a water hazard, dropped within two club lengths of the unplayable point and played the ball? Stroke play, of course.
