Waaaaaaaaaaay back when Tommy Armour introduced the Ti100 irons, they were at the Ottawa golf show to hit.
The hitting mats had sand on them and every swing with a Ti100 was like Canada Day. Sparks were flying all over the place.
For those that don't remember them, the Ti100's were huge and ugly as sin.Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

I had a hard time believing it was sand causing sparks so I had always assumed it was the fertilizer on the tee box.

I had a few incidents two years ago with a driver, where we saw some sparks.
In the one case you could smell burning on the tee box...
I won't say which course, but it was not one you'd expect to have a lot of rocks in the tee boxes... sand or fertilizer makes more sense though.
