Ottawa Citizen Amateur Golf Championship Update

Michael Walker Leads By 6 Strokes After Round 1

Presented by the Buick Dealers of Ottawa-Hull

    Wednesday, July 4, 2001

    Media Release

Ottawa - Yesterday, 144 local amateur golfers, all with an index of 10 or less, competed in Round 1 of the Ottawa Citizen Amateur Golf Championship presented by the Buick Dealers of Ottawa-Hull at the Kanata Golf and Country Club.

Competition was tough, but Michael Walker of the Outaouais shot an amazing 69, 1 under par. Scott Johnson and Larry Lucas both shot a 75, 5 over par and are tied for second. Three players are tied for third, at 7 over par. All 144 golfers automatically qualify for Round 2, to be played on July 11th at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.

Ottawa Citizen Representative, Mr. Peter O’Leary and Buick Dealers’ Representative, Mr. Jim Low were excited about the quality of play and enthusiasm of our local amateur talent! Mr. Peter O’Leary stated: "It was an excellent day of competition. We had wonderful course conditions and great golf during our inaugural Round 1."

The golfers represented areas from as far away as Buckingham, Casselman, Prescott, Cornwall, Renfrew and Beachburg. Fourty-eight golf courses were represented.

The field will be reduced to 72 golfers (plus ties) for Round 3 to be held at Camelot Golf and Country Club on July 23rd. Only 36 golfers (plus ties) will compete in Championship Round 4 at Eagle Creek Golf Club on July 30th. The Amateur Champion will hold the best cumulative gross score of the four rounds of competition.

Round 2 tee time is set for 7:00am, Wednesday, July 10th at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club with golfers teeing off throughout the day at 8 minute intervals.

    General Info
This is the first time the citizen has run this event (it is presented by the Buick Dealers Association of Ottawa-Hull). It is targeted at better amateur golfers (male and female 10 handicap or less). The field is limited to 144 players. The first round is being played at Kanata Lakes on July 3rd, the second round at Stonebridge on July 11th. After Stonebridge, the field is cut to low 72 and ties. The third round is at Camelot on July 23rd. After Camelot the field is reduced to low 36 and ties. The final round is at Eagle Creek on July 30th.
Even thought it is a gross event, handicap verification is required on the entry form. The cost of entry is $100.00, which gives a person two guaranteed rounds (at Kanata and Stonebridge).*
Each of the four clubs have entry forms, as does Tommy & Lefebvre stores, as does the citizen.*
The person heading up the event is Jim Lowe his number is 728-1091.

    Exclamation really???????

....er.... I just looked at the scores for the first round.. in the paper.... there were a LOT of scores over 85, in fact there were a LOT of scores over 100, considering the maximum index was supposed to be 10. What gives???

Sure it would, but they did not send me the full field scores, just the press release I posted.

    IS there an online resource?

to get all of the amateur scores....

I am guessing that the word "amateur" indicates that most of the entrants do not regularly enter tournaments with

    a. strict rules
    b. increased pressure internally and externally
    etc.

I suspect this is why many players shot well above there usual play.

    Just a thought!:p

    Angry

Stonebridge's Erin McHardy, 23, the lone woman in the field, was thrown for a bit of loop when Ottawa Valley Golf Association officials told her she'd be competing from the same championship-tee distances as her male competitors. She shot a 92.

    Boo! Hiss!
