When will this Bllody Winter End?

    http://www.accuweather.com/en/ca/nat...monyr=3/1/2014

The long, long range into April doesn't look good! We may not be teeing it up till May!

This is only a month long forcast which for the next two weeks closely matches the Weatherchannel 14 day

(You're going to be taxed on a several decade/century forcast.)

All I know is this FREEZING, then mild temperatures, then snow, then mild, then freezing again, is a nightmare for the conditions of the courses in the Spring.

Actually this winter has been pretty good as far as freeze/thaw cycles have been concerned, if you think lack of thaw is a good thing.

Of course it's going to get warm this week, but I don't know if it will be warm enough for long enough to get down to the grass.

I suspect even it if does start to warm up its going to take a while for the ground to unfreeze and start absorbing the water into it. I'm sure we can safely predict we won't be golfing in March this year without heading quite a bit south.

I was going to say, what freezing and thawing have we experienced thus far? It's been freezing since December with one very short stretch of milder temps...

Umm..There was quite a bit of thawing in January. I know this because I was able to keep my driveway clear for most of the month.

From the 11th to the 19th, it was above zero for five days in a row, and then was -3. The week before that, it was cold for two days, and two days were it was 6 and 7 degrees.

I guess above zero and those temps aren't thawing? We lost a ton of snow at my place. Maybe Kanata is in a bubble? HAHA!

I know I will be golfing in April.

Going to Pinehurst for 5 days before we hit the Tuesday practice round at the Masters.

Ay type of melting, thawing, freezing rain, creates a layer of ice between snow. This is detrimental to the conditions of the courses in the Spring. FACT.

I will happily disagree with your winter analysis! It was cold enough in December and January leading to those temps that there is no way the ground was affected like it was last year.

That's fine. You may disagree...But I am not talking about the frost level. I am talking about layers of ice between layers of snow. This is what happened last year at our course, and Kanata. I spoke extensively with numerous greens keepers, and they all mentioned that whenever the temperature rises to create melting, then flash freezes as it has been doing this winter, it "smothers" the turf below it.

For example...You have a blanket of snow insulating the layer of ice...Which is what the ground is covered with right now, the snow melts at a normal pace, but the ice is still there. You will notice this on ski hills as well....A layer of manmade or natural snow, but the crusty, or sometimes solid ice layer below....

I'm no turf expert, so don't shoot the messenger. But these are the exact words of guys who do this for a living. So I tend to agree with them.

I will not do a lot of argueing about frost levels,ice/snow coverage, etc.I will state that I do believe this winter will not cause the damage last winter did.
What I will say on the original topic is I want winter to end.Had enough.
Will be in the Carolinas the last week of March,do it every year(my inlaws are on the seventh hole of a decent coarse in N. Carolina) It would be nice to be able to get on the coarses with in a reasonable time after geting home after 10 straight days golfing(well maybe a day on the road between N.C. and Mertle Beach).

Not to rub snow into the wounds but the long range through April calls for below normal temperatures, with a 50% chance of being correct. Wouldn't it be nice if they were wrong!!

Actually, course openings last season were much later than normal. I believe we, Greensmere, opened near the end if April versus the normal middle. It was 2012 that we opened March 22 with some others allowing play before that.

The Golf Expo is next weekend. Seems WAY too early this year. -20 every night this week. Not exactly the kind of weather that gets one excited for the arrival of spring. It's usually at the end of March and it's a bit early even then IMHO.

Unless it gets really warm, really quickly in March and April, we are looking at May for sure.

I have to agree with Marc---it is beautiful down here HH.........but we have had our cool days---low 50s Glad to see you are having a good time Marc.

We were in Orlando Monday to Thursdays----mid 80s .

In all honesty everyone---don't be too envious---it has been a rough winter down here---the weather has not been at all near the norm. We have been lucky just to be able to play the 7 games I have played.

The big advantage on the whole is that I am not at home shoveling

This will probably be our last trip to HH Island---there are much better places to spend you time and money---watch for update in the travel section in April.
    Does the 2nd hole-n-one come easier ?

    Sign of Spring?

Although it's not the first robin of the year, I did see my first truckload of SeaDoos on the highway!
