    Match Play - More than one match being played

    We play match play. Because of time restrictions we often have 3 matches within one foursome. A situation arose where a player played the wrong ball in the fairway. His opponent whose ball was played, noted the error and advised the player before another stroke was made. The player's original ball was still in play. Since the other two opponents were not impacted by the wrongly struck ball, the decision was that the player lost the hole to the opponent whose ball was struck but that the other two matches could continue. The moderator opinion was that as soon as he struck a wrong ball he automatically lost that hole to all players. Opinions please. Remember this is friendly match play and the unusual circumstance of playing more than one match within a group.

    As soon as he plays a wrong ball he loses the hole in any match he is playing.

    Wrong Ball
    A “wrong ball’’ is any ball other than the player’s:

    Ball In Play;
    Provisional Ball; or
    second ball played under Rule 3-3 or Rule 20-7c in stroke play;
    and includes:

    another player’s ball;
    an abandoned ball; and
    the player’s original ball when it is no longer In Play.

    15-3. Wrong Ball
    a. Match Play
    If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, he loses the hole.

    If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played.

    The format that you described is not that unusual as it is the one that area golfers use for the five sets, (junior, M/L regular and M/L senior) of the ever popular, Intersectional matches. It is a modified Three Ball format (Rule 30-2)

    Yes, this is in fact the only format that I know of. Did not know there were more until recently doing some research
