Thread: Irons too heavy
-
07-31-2013 09:10 AM #31
They're simply too heavy for me at this point. I'm just learning how to properly lag and release my club on the downswing and I think I'll have more control of the club with a lighter shaft. Right now, when I release the club I feel the heavy shaft. What I want to feel is the shaft and the club head.

Figure out what they are swingweighting out to and go from there. Lighter you go the more control is affected too.
You are very steve stricker'ish to me from what i've seen in terms of lag and late to no wrist cock.

Lag is just a byproduct of good mechanics, impact and follow through are crucial too when talking distance. You need to start compressing the ball with your irons.

I also need to start compressing the ball, easier said than done.
Obviously you're not a golfer.

Let me know when you guys graduate back to mens shafts
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

I would play Nancy Lopez clubs with pink shafts if it gave me 20 extra yards

Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and Boo Weekley have done pretty well this year with graphite shafted irons. Don't be so closed minded Pablo my friend

That's what I was going to say. There are Aerotechs and Recoils out there.

At $50 per shaft it had better work miracles.

Graphite has better shock absorption for one. It is also possible to engineer pretty much any bend profile you want.

You could also try this cheap experiment:
Put a Wynn Lite golf grip on one of your clubs.
Weighs in at 29 grams vs the usual 53 grams.Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

As mentioned there are a couple of things in play here. The weight of your clubhead and the weight of the shaft. If your swing feels like your swinging a heavy ball on the end of the shaft its the weight of the clubhead. If the club feels overall heavy it's the shaft. I have a feeling your talking about the weight of the clubhead. I don't believe you need a lighter shaft. Investigate how the club was made. You're going to have to pop the heads and take a look for tip weights in the shaft and the clubhead. Standard is D-2 but some manufacturers specs are way off when it comes to Stainless cast clubheads. If you don't want to take the club apart counter balancing is the way to go with a heavier counter balanced grib as mentioned - or you can post weights in the grip end.
As an example I have some Ping Eye 2's with a project shaft and they swing weight at d-0 to d-1.

I went to graphite this year, I was using 90g steel shafts and went down to 75g, it was a bit of a change but I love them now. I am over 55 so I need all the help I can get!!

Pablo.... from the beginning I wonder why don't you want to use graphite???
If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.
