    Two club lenght relief question

Must a two club lenght relief have to be taken in a straight line or can it be taken in a broken line? Let's say in a L

As long as it's within 2 club lengths and not nearer the hole, it's valid. Besides, there's no other measurement / configuration that could give you more options than 2 'straight' club lengths. The 'L' that you described would just be between 1 and 2 club lengths.

Slightly related question... yesterday i watched Jason Day take relief from behind a scoreboard. he started by using his driver and took 2 club lengths from where the official said he could drop. The driver put him into a tree, so he went back and his caddie handed him his putter which he then measured out a second time.

Unfortunately after all was said and done, it was determined that he was dropping closer than where he picked up his ball so they recalculated his drop. I thought once you started measuring with a club you couldn't switch to a new club? Would he have gotten a penalty if he had hit his ball after measuring with 2 different clubs (besides that it was closer to the hole)

This would have been done under the local Rule for a temporary immovable obstruction (TIO) in Appendix I. That local Rule provides relief for line of play from socreboards, grandstands etc. When the player's ball is in or behind the TIO and the TIO interferes with his line of play and a direct line to the hole, the player is entitled to free relief. Relief is taken by moving to the nearest side (unless relief is permitted on either side) and lining up the outside edge of the TIO with the flagstick equidistant from the hole where the ball lay in or behind the TIO. Relief from that point is more than one clublength but less than two clublengths. Any club can be used for measuring. Once the ball has been dropped, the player may not change clubs used for measuring.
If you want to fully understand this local Rule, look here (but be prepared for some difficult reading!)

The restriction on changing clubs starts when the ball is dropped.
