    Carl Pettersson US Open 2013 Merion Ball Is Hit By Another Ball

    Yeah... It's a pretty straight-forward ruling as it ended up because he was able to stop his swing in time. He puts his ball back where it was and the other ball is played from where it came to rest.

    I'm wondering what the ruling would have been if:

    - he was already in his downswing and the second ball moves his and he 'whiffs'

    - he hit just his ball the instant after it was moved by the second ball. (in motion / at rest)

    - he hit just the other ball (in motion / at rest)

    - he hit BOTH balls (in motion / at rest)


    Actually, I'm wondering if the rules of golf ever contemplated such an incredibly unlikely occurrence.

    (2) Stroke -No penalty under 14-5(ball began moving after back swing started) or 18-2b (he did not cause the ball to move)
    (3) 2 penalty strokes (wrong ball)

    Other opinions??
