    You're not lifting your head

How many times have you heard "keep your head down" or "keep your eye on the ball" after a topped shot? After many years of teaching, I have yet to meet someone who lifted their head. The cause of the topped shot is actually the flipping motion of the hands through impact that cause the club to lift prematurely, striking the top portion of the ball. Hands that initiate the downswing will cause the clubhead to rush past the hands creating a flipping or scooping motion. To avoid this, the lead shoulder (target side) must move laterally toward the target at the start of the downswing. This will initiate rotation, ensure that the majority of your weight has been transfered to the lead leg (target side), and allow the downswing to start in the proper chronological order. If you've never compressed the golf ball, try this tip.

I have struggled with lifting the body on the through swing rather than straightening my lead leg and have my lead hip go backwards instead of my hip going toward the ball.
