Sanding them with medium grit sand paper would have helped tremendously before washing them with soap and water.
If you were to put the clubs upside down in a bucket and let them sit for a day or so with something like orange glow

or Hertel they would definitely no longer smell like cigarette Or you could sell them to a smoker

I tried this today it worked great and does a fantastic job. It is a little work to do a lot of grips but very worth it for the results as they are like new. Make sure you get the correct prod t at Can Tire with code 39-0716-8 cost about $10. I did my Scotty Cameron red grip and this alone saved me $30 as I really like that specific grip.

Just read the post and tried it. Is was Ok but I still stick to my Spray 9. Just spray and wipe off after 30 seconds, try it and you will believe. Read the back it even says good for sporting goods. Just my 2cents

    Not recommended on Winn grips:
    http://www.winngrips.com/grip-care

    CLEANING A WINN GRIP

Because Winn grips have absorbent properties, they may eventually soil from dirt and perspiration from your golf glove and hands. This does not affect the performance of the grip.
To clean a Winn grip, apply a small amount of water to a soft towel, and gently rub the grips. Do not saturate the towel. Never use a brush and soapy water to clean a Winn grip because it may damage the top surface and destroy the tackiness and slip-resistance of the grip.
DO NOT immerse Winn grips in a bucket of water to clean them. This will saturate the underlying layer of the grip and may ruin the grip.
