Question Ping "I" series vs. "G" series + related question

Think positive thoughts... think positive thoughts...

OK - question for all the gurus out there. For over a decade I've hovered around a 15-16 handicap. Last year started with a slump like I've never ever had. Despite being the biggest eternal optimist anyone in my circle has ever seen, I never once broke out of it and that slump lasted all year long. I think I may have hit 20-21 at the end of the season! Much of the time it looked like I didn't know what I was doing. Won't be the case this year... yeah - that's right! hehehehe...

I'm a Ping iron guy. Played Ping Eye 2, for years, picked up a set of i3 used to get more modern at some point and in 2008 I bought a set of new Ping i10 irons to celebrate the new job.

I always read that the G series is a more 'forgiving' set. I managed to steal a set from a co-worker for a very small sum... thinking that by taking them out this year, if even for a handful of games, I can get that stupid head of mine screwed back on straight. Changing them up, you know?

The Eye 2, i3 and i10 all "look" the same when standing over them. The G10 looks a bit different and maybe that's all I need to mix things up. What ARE the theoretical advantages/disadvantages to the I versus G irons?

Last little question - the 5 iron is missing its "badge" on the back. Does anyone know if it's just a plastic disk or is it actually weighted? I know I could ask the pro at my part-time course, but I know you'll have an answer much faster!

Thanks guys for whatever feedback you can send my way!

    Mike

I had a set of i10s and i15s and remember reading that the i10s were the hardest set of 'i' series irons to hit. I think I saw somewhere that the i10s were a tad less forgiving than the s57 or s58 (whichever was released the same year)
You might just be suffering from the difficulty of hitting the i10s . .
Even I've never heard of me

I'm not sure about the older i and G series irons but the new ones (i20 and G25 irons) seem to look as though the G series are more of a game improvement set up, with much wider sole, maybe a bit bigger head size compared to the i20's. Perhaps the i series have been aimed towards the lower handicappers and the G's towards the higher handicappers. Here's a link to all the older ping irons and you can read up on the sets you have.

You may be in need of more/less offset. Also, ping has so many dot colors for fitting that maybe you're hitting a set that isn't matched up to your needs. A link to the Ping online fitting system (even though it is clearly not as beneficial as a real fitting). Hope this helps

I'm currently playing i15's with PX5.5 shafts & also own G10's with R300s. Overall, I prefer the long irons in the G10s and the short irons in the i15s. The G10 3-iron is practically a hybrid. The G10s are far more forgiving on bad swings, but I prefer the narrower soles & lower flight of the i15s.

Now that I think about it, I might test the G10s out on the range and compare the sets again.

Ok, so you have all confirmed what I thought. I will start the season with the G10's and see if I can get my game back on track after a bad 2012. Maybe what I'll do is mimic Mr. Chi and make a set with long irons in the G10 series and the short irons in the i10 series. We'll see how the year evolves. Thanks all.

Regarding the Ping fitting system, I was fitted for my i10's in 2008 and I assume that not much has changed from age 33 to 37 last year that would have drastically altered my game. Was just a bad slump in a year where I struggled to get out and play, I guess going from 50-70 games a year pre-2008 to ~30 games last year might have a bigger impact on my playing ability than I might have thought. OR, I'll shoot the lights out this year. heheheh - we'll see!

As for the name plate on the back of the 5 iron, I just got back from Golf Town. They confirmed that it is weighted and a critical component. The club's going back to Ping for repairs. Free of charge. I love Ping for that. 5 year old club - and with the G10's I'm not even the original owner - and they're fixing it completely under 'warranty'. Don't see that much anymore in any other industry...

Nice, I wouldn't mind knowing what the turn around is for that repair.

I have a set of i3's (backup set now) but when I originally purchased them they were blue dot. After many years of using them I had them sent back to Ping to be set to black dot. All free of charge, I just paid for shipping. The turnaround time was just over a week.

I am in the market for a new set of irons and am planning on going back to Pings. i20's are the plan.

Bulldog, I would suggest getting fitted again just to be certain that your lie angle hasn't changed.

The badge on the back is a rubber sticker - supposed to play some vibration dampening role, but it isn't weighted significantly.

I would first consider what your normal miss is. I'm no guru, but I am a Ping fan, and a decent irons player. If you tend to hit pull/hooks, I would stay far away from the G series. The I10's ARE smaller, more compact that the G series, but they are much easier to line up, IMHO. You might try weighting the bottoms a little, unless you're slicing irons, in which case something more GI would be worth considering. The I-5 or I-15's would probably be a better choice for a long-term irons set - the shot-making capabilities of the I's, with more of the forgiveness inherent in the G's.

I am of the opinion that until you are at a point in your golf game where you can and need to consistently shape the ball both ways on command you should be playing with the most forgiving, perimeter-weighted, low COG "game-improvement" clubs possible.

Have the swingweight measured. If it is the same as the other clubs then it would only be a cosmetic issue. As far as your woes did you keep track of how many greens in regulation, how many putts, and so forth?
