Loft and Lies
How often do you check your loft and lies of your irons? I used to do it a few times a summer when I had access to a bending machine, but I haven't checked forever. Of course this is more of a matter for people with forged clubs as cast is obviously not going to change that much.
I need to check mine before the season start. Anyone have a machine I can use?

HAHA! It was more a question of frequency...not when you will do it this season. If you play say 50 rounds a year or more, it's possible your lofts and lies have changed during the season.

I just got mine checked at Golfworks, they will check them for you for free. Only a cost involved if they need bending.
I don't get mine checked very often.Obviously you're not a golfer.

Are you saying that you checked the lies and lofts using the bending machine ?
These babies are designed to bend, not measure specific angles. That's why they make and sell really expensive measuring gages for the sole purpose of establishing true lie and loft measurements.
These gages I speak of go hand and hand with a lie test to establish true readings, witch are part of the blueprint of your equipment.
Because of the multitude of sole designs on the market, there is no possible way that the bending machine will provide an accurate reading.
If you are getting your L&L checked in 15 minutes, they are using a benbing machine to do it.
Get it done properly, get a blue print and know what your personal specs are in degrees, not in relation to STANDARD, for witch there is no such thing.Last edited by downhillslider; 01-25-2013 at 10:37 PM. Reason: found some more to add

I'm a bit confused. If a bending machine is not accurate to measure loft or lie, how would one even use it for bending?

When the club is sitting in the craddle of the BM, L&L of said club are established based on the soling of the club in the craddle, not in the designed square position.
I have seen clubs out as much as 2* from the measurment of the gage, reasons beeing the design of the sole and the placement of the club in the craddle.
The #'s you get from the BM are used to determine and show you the amount of bend you have put on the club.
Example: 7i in gage reads 62* lie. your blueprint calls for 61*.
7i gets craddled and reads 63* lie.
7i needs to be bent to the 62* mark on the BM .

Unless the head is sitting perfectly square, you will not get an accurate loft reading.
BM's are BM's, not a Lie/Loft gage. Retail shops use the BM because it quick and looks impressive to the cutomer. Do you see any L/L gages at these establishments ? Probably not because it takes time and someone who is skilled and undertands the logistics involved.
To do the job properly, it takes time. Time is $$$ at the retail end of things. The quicker they can get you in and out making you beleive that you received top notch service, the quicker they can get the next wide eyed customer who knows nothing about golf club adjustments up to the cash register thinking he was well taken care of.

Echoing what others have said, most loft and lie bending machines are not accurate enough for measuring.
Something like the True Blue MR3 might be an exception. At $1000+ it's not cheap though. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

I'm not going to spend $1000+ on a Blueprint. My job is not to golf. I do it for fun, exercise, and too keep the blood pressure pill makers in business.

More like 22 feet. 20 yards offline is a really really bad swing.

Late last season, I was trying out a Nakashima head, quickly jammed a shaft in it, s.wed it and off I go with my sticks and this different 7i in the bag.
I'm a lefty and I could not, for the life of me, get this thing to even remotly staight, let alone some kind of fade. Everything going right !
I play a 7i with a lie of 60*. Measured the demo club, 62.* lie.
Bent the demo to 60*, went out a few days later, it just might find it's way into my bag this season, love it !

So I dropped off my iron set at golfworks yesterday. They will check the lofts and let me know how off they are. They charge $5 for each club that needs to be adjusted.

Numbers on the left, with the yellow, look to be the measured lofts. The "adj " indicates which were adjusted, and the number to the right of the printed numerous is themeasurement after adjustment.

#'s 0n far left are the the loft measurements performed with my gage..
The yellow highlights indicate lofts that required an adjusment for proper incrementation.
The #'s on the far right are the lies measured in my gage.
The highlighted ones are suspicious.
No adjusments were done.
A proper lie test will be performed to determine required lies.
The photo with red dots are the loft measurments after adjustments were done.
