Why are some penalties loss of hole and others are penaltys. And is there an easy way to know, thanks

If the penalty in stroke play would have been two strokes its loss of hole in match play and a one stroke penalty is the same in either format.

Not an exception. Penalty for OB is one stroke. The "difference" is that you must replay from the spot where you last played so it is like a two stroke penalty, but it isn't really.

Isn't that why most people refer to that one as "stroke and distance"? It reminds you that it is a one stroke penalty, not two.

Actually the official penalty is referred to as "Stroke and distance". I figured since there was some confusion I would try to explain it in more detail.

some people refere to stroke and distance simply to reduce confusion. For example, if you are on the fairway and must go back to the tee. You are on your third shot and only on the tee.

Tim, here is a simple challenge for your son. Generally, a two stroke penalty in stroke play is a loss of hole penalty in match play, but not always. See if he can come up with a situation(s) where the penalty is two strokes in stoke play but not a loss of hole in match. Lyle
